Things change. The Band of Heathens has changed - there's a new line-up and a more laid-back sound on this recent collection of songs. And although they are now distinctly different than the original version of the band that I came to love with their original studio album and the magnificent follow up "One Foot in The Ether", the new lineup featuring Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist still maintains what it was that made them so amazing in the first place - great song writing, beautiful voices and masterful musicianship. Additionally, the more prominent keyboard work of Trevor Nealon is a welcome addition. Having just seen these guys playing live about a week ago, I can guarantee they're still the killer rock band they were in the past and the new "Shake the Foundation" shows they can be as gritty as they ever were. However, this album really highlights their gorgeous harmonies and song writing. Stand out tracks include Ed singing "Caroline Williams" and "Records in Bed" and a couple of stunning songs by Gordy "Since I've Been Home" and "One More Trip". If you ever loved The BOH don't fret the changes… embrace these guys. This is a wonderful album.

The Band of Heathens continues to surprise. While their new album offers up the Americana and Little Feat-styled funk fans have come to expect, there's a thread of late 1960s production pop that's a welcome addition. This opening track, "Shotgun," tips the album's surprise with its nod to "Everybody's Talkin'." Gordy Quist sings the opening "I heard that you were talkin' 'bout me, I heard you had a smile on your face while you cried, cried, cried," with a rhythm and melody that easily brings to mind Fred Neil's original couplet. The song quickly establishes its own sound, but the unison singing, keyboards and electric sitar-like guitar preview echoes of Curt Boettcher, Gary Usher and Brian Wilson heard in several of the album's tracks.

Ed Jurdi opens the album's second song with a voice as warm and soulful as Quist's. Where the opener was pleased to see an indiscreet ex-lover (or, perhaps, a recently departed, smack-talking founding member of the band) receding in the rear-view mirror, "Caroline Williams" is rife with the pain and confusion of the left behind. Recently arrived drummer Richard Millsap adds both rhythm and melody with his tom toms, and a short instrumental pairing of piano and wordless vocals echoes another element of late-60s studio pop. Jurdi and Quest wrote this album amid both personal and band changes, and transition is a running theme. In addition to relationships in formation, reformation and dissolution, there's a longing for stability and simplicity.

The Heathens' complexities come to the fore in the personal inventories of "Since I've Been Home," the funky "Miss My Life" and the media-saturated world of "Records in My Bed.

The Band of Heathens has evolved its sound on each of its four studio albums, and Sunday Morning Record may be the most apparent departure from the band's debut - but there is still the classic BoH sound to be found on this album, as well as a more mature, worn sound, which is no doubt the result of a difficult few years for the band.

My favorites from the album are as follows: "Shotgun" sounds like it could have come from Gordy Quist's solo album, Here Comes the Flood, and incorporates beautiful harmonies between Quist and Ed Jurdi, as well as effective tempo changes. The chorus in "Caroline Williams" is sure to get stuck in your head after a single listen, and the song is a great slow-jam.

"Miss My Life" is a change of pace from the first two songs with a faster tempo, well-written lyrics, and a kind of a gypsy rock sound. It reminds me of the Belleville Outfit somewhat. "Since I've Been Home" is a gorgeous acoustic ballad with introspective lyrics, another classic Gordy Quist song. "Shake the Foundation" could have come off of any Band of Heathens album--a rootsy rock song with a powerful, distorted chorus. "Had it All" is another beautiful ballad, with piano/keyboard taking the forefront musically and haunting harmonies in the chorus. Finally, "Texas" is a slow-building ballad that takes off around the 3:14 marker, quiets down, before building up again to its finish. This would have fit in nicely on One Foot in the Ether.

The songs on Sunday Morning Record are not unrecognizable as BoH, but they reveal a growing, changing band. This album offers a more mature, introspective, and polished assortment of songs. Gordy Quist is one of my favorite songwriters out there, and these songs fully deliver both musically and lyrically.

By far the best band I've come across to date. Better than Dead, the Band, all those big name Americana groups. Every song is enjoyable and seeing these guys live is mind blowing. Fell in love with this band in 2009 and never looked back. Nobody compares

laid back vibe.... easy to enjoy. Listeners can appreciate The Band of Heathens' commitment to music and not sacrificing content just for radio play time.
