The Photon 170 is a beautiful and well-designed Reservoir. Made of glass, it has a very clear and translucent look to it. The LED lighting is a neat feature. Although the led inserts at the bottom, the entire center cylindrical tube is illuminated. The backplate and mounting brackets are made of steel and feel very sturdy. It disassembles easy and has 3 different lower ports for fittings. While other reservoirs have more fittings options, I think for the sake of aesthetics, it is very desirable to only have 3 ports for fittings. This way the very sleek aesthetics of the reservoir are disrupted by non used screwholes on the side or top.
While the reservoir may offer features that would appear to be geared toward "gaming" aesthetics, it is not over the top and maintains an elegant look.
The only con I would list (thus far) is that the fill port is very NARROW. Because of the center illuminated tube where no water can enter, you are essentially filling small slots on the side of the top of the center cylinder. These slots can easily get filled with air or the reservoir can get filled with enough air to prevent water from smoothly going through these small slots and your liquid can start over flowing although the reservoir is no where close to being full. It's best to invest in a small straw to reach the inside of the reservoir when filling. It may take longer but will save headaches in the long run.

Every G 1/4 port stripped/shredded due to soft material.
This product looks so beautiful and high quality: aluminum backplate, aluminum circular rings to mount the tube, real glass, frosted center cylinder with rubber grommet to easily mount an LED, good port spacing, nickel-plated plugs. But the manufacturer cheaped-out on the most critical part of the entire design -- the end caps and port holes. While mounted to aluminum rings, the caps/port holes are actually made of soft plastic or acetal. They shred as you thread in any kind of fitting. I tried all 3 ports very gently, carefully trying to start the threading straight on each with different G 1/4" fittings, but the outer thread immediately collapses and from there no matter how much time you invest, nothing will thread straight or tight. Additional context: I have other acetal in my current loop as well as past loops, none have shredded like this one. Also, all my fittings are XSPC brand G 1/4.
I would gladly pay another $20 to have better materials rather than the most critical part being a cheap plastic. (Also note that some online reviews describe the ends as aluminum; what they mean is the rings holding the end caps to the backplate are aluminum. The product description on Amazon accurately describes the caps as acetal.) At the very least, the holes should be drilled slightly smaller allowing you to self-tap your own fittings. With this design, even if you manage to get your 2-3 fittings installed perfectly the first time, what happens when you have to change a fitting? Currently requesting a return on mine but unsure what to do as I have already designed a compact system around this unit's dimensions and screw spacing, and love everything else about the unit except this glaring materials flaw.Read more ›
