My wife and I have been using this coffee maker--with the glass carafe--for about a week. On the plus side, it makes a decent cup of coffee. On the down side, though, this morning while it was brewing, the glass carafe cracked and leaked hot coffee all over our counter and down through a drawer and cabinet. The crack is a large J-shape running down from the top rim almost to the metal band that secures the bottom of the handle. The carafe and water were both about room temp before brewing, neither hot nor cold, so there shouldn't have been any temperature extremes that the carafe wasn't designed to handle. Very disappointed that it broke like this, although I suppose I'm thankful that it didn't shatter and get glass shards everywhere.
I don't think it's a bad coffee maker, and I suspect we just ended up with a bad carafe, but I'd highly recommend getting the thermal carafe instead of the glass carafe.

VERDICT: DO NOT BUY MELITTA
This coffee maker lasted a whopping 6 months and it finally gave out and is now resting peacefully in the trash. The rust which I photographed after a couple of months (see photo) got progressively worse. I assume that the rust (which of course also dripped down into the water reservoir) somehow messed up the water-boiling capability of the machine because it finally quit brewing almost completely. I ran two cycles of Brew-Rite through the thing with no luck, and tried vinegar, same result. It may not have been the rust, but I've never seen a maker quit working so soon.
This is a piece of junk and if you buy it you've been warned. Yes, some seem people to have gotten a good one... will you? After calling customer support and jumping through some hoops to get a supervisor, I was finally given the option of returning the machine (after just 3 months, mind you) if I only paid the postage which was $10 or so. So, I get a factory defective machine AND I get the privilege of PAYING more to get another one? LOL - I won't be buying Melitta again.
Update August 20, 2015: Today is Thursday and I first spoke with Customer Service at Hamilton Beach on Monday. I was told to email them a copy of my order invoice from Amazon which I did, along with this photo. A few days later, today, I was called back and was told that my problem isn't rust, but minerals in my water! LOL OK, really? I know what rust looks like #1, and #2 our coffee water is filtered through an in-home water purifier. And imagine that, not a single solitary other item in our home has mineral stains even after years of use.Read more ›

This pot worked great for about 5 uses, then started leaking all over the counter. I tried changing the amount I brewed, the brew strength, the amount of coffee used...and it still leaks. When a pot is about 3/4 finished brewing, hot coffee starts leaking out of the lid where you press to allow yourself to pour a cup. Of course NOW I see all the reviews that say something similar. The coffee maker has not been dropped. Do not buy unless you want to clean up hot coffee. I have never had to return anything to Amazon but I plan to return this pot.
**UPDATE**: I have changed my star rating for this product from 1 star to 4 stars because I was finally able to figure out a way to use it so it doesn't leak. Some people have stated that it leaks around the red band, but if you look inside the pot it is solid around the band...the band is only decorative. The actual problem is the lid. First, it fills with coffee, so be sure when cleaning the pot to hold the lid over the sink and press the tab that allows you to pour coffee (this will make sense when you see it) and let it drain out and rinse with water. This takes about 10 seconds. The photos in the instruction manual show the lid "sealed" in place with the tab in alignment with the handle while brewing. This causes leaking while brewing. *TO AVOID LEAKING, BREW WITH THE LID TAB TURNED AT A FULL 45 DEGREE ANGLE* to the pot handle. I have included a photo with the lid in the correct position. When finished brewing, you can turn the lid in alignment with the handle so the pot is sealed and the coffee stays hot. When I do this, all of the hot coffee flows into the pot and not all over the counter.Read more ›
