Even More Impressed, Update May 5, 2014

I have been enjoying these speakers now for several weeks and continue to be pleased and excited by their performance. As experience has shown, the really low bass is the challenge for the smaller speaker but these amazing speakers continue to pump out clean, linear low bass with quantity and quality that is very satisfying. Whatever M-Audio has done to match the bass amplifier and the 8-inch Woven Kevlar Woofer has been done very well indeed!

Original Review

I have been an audio hobbyist since 1953 and watched the amazing development of home audio over the years since then. While I have an outstanding home theater system connected to my Sony 3D TV I wanted a first class set of speakers to be used when we didn't want to fire up the main system but would still provide satisfying sound from a variety of sources.

I had read the reviews concerning the Sony TV I wanted and had been warned the built-in audio was pathetic and quickly discovered those reviews to be very accurate. From the beginning I ordered the M-Audio AV40 speakers and found them to be adequate for most broadcast programs. They are small, lightweight and are advertised as desk top speakers. The left speaker contains two 20 watt amplifiers for both left and right speakers and powers the right speaker via a speaker cable. They are clearly advertised as left and right speakers and come as a set.

I mention this specifically because the M3-8 Active Studio Monitor is as different from the AV40 as a Ferrari is from a Fiesta. The M3-8 is an individual speaker with tri-amplification totaling 220 watts that can be used in a variety of combinations including mono, stereo or 7.1 surround sound as desired.

I have two of these. They sound really good - but not as good or as accurate as my Adam F7 monitors (more expensive but less beautiful).

'Con': These seem somewhat more susceptible to hum compared to my F7 monitors when used with unbalanced RCA connector & cables. I put an old Krell preamp in series with these cables (unbalanced in, balanced out). With that configuration I experience no hum whatsoever. Also, there have been comments about a slight hiss from these monitors. Yes .. When I place my ear directly against the tweeter I can hear it. To me, this minuscule hiss is not worth mentioning, and is definitely not a 'con'.

So far, so good.
Sound: Very flat with EQ to adjust if your room isn't, or for listening (there is also an EQ bypass switch so you can switch between listening and mixing). Crossover switch for 80/100 Hz rolloff (for use with subwoofer.) These things get LOUD and stay flat. There is a bit of hiss at idle, but you'll never notice it at any listening volume.
Aesthetics: The narrow beam blue light tells you exactly when you're in the sweet spot (not that you can't hear it, but it's nice to have a visual). I like the wood grain face. Much nicer to look at than my previous monitors.

The look is polished. The sound is polished.

I purchased one pair of these speakers from an outside vendor in the spring of 2014 to replace the built in speakers of my plasma TV. I'd read the reviews and expected a great sounding speaker. When I hooked them up, I was simply blown away with a big grin. It has been years since I've had any speakers worthy of the name. Our home theater area is about 18x30'. The speakers fit inside our entertainment center spaces and still have all the punch and clarity they had outside the enclosure. Base is killer. I can't imagine needing or wanting a subwoofer but they are ready to go that route with a toggle switch on the back. The bass response (as well as treble, midrange and overall signal attenuation or gain) is adjustable on the rear. The bass on some DirecTV programming had my friends looking around the room wondering what they'd just heard.

The multiple input options , given the right cable connectors, allow you to connect 3 different sources (with preamp output) without a switch, more with. I use one for DirecTV (with a speaker to line level converter), one for a home theater PC, and one for an old tape deck. Without a power strip, once inside a cabinet, there is no easy way to turn these off using the switch on the rear of the cabinet (nor make adjustments to the equalizer and gain settings). These have been powered up going on 2 years. Some remark about a hiss if you are right next to the speaker when idling. It's there but from a few feet away I hear nothing. Using cheap cables can induce a hum, especially long cheap cables.

In all, I'm pleased enough to buy a second set some weeks ago for our living room. Even playing thru a bluetooth adapter from my smartphone they sound great!

I still need to calibrate these correctly, but they are working out very well for me once I got things set up nicely.

Pros:

each speaker is a standalone, amplified loudspeaker (they don't connect to each other in any way)
each speaker has balanced 1/4" and XLR inputs, and unbalanced unbalanced RCA/phono plug
each speaker has basic EQ and level knobs
each speaker has a blue "power on" LED on the front - it is tiny, but can be used to judge speaker aim as it has a narrow beam

Cons:

these speakers are large - 10 5/8(w) x 17 1/4(h) x 14(d)
they are accurate and loud (see below for how this is a con)

I have had studio monitor speakers attached to my PC in the past, and that is where these went right away. First problem was that I needed to split my 3.5mm -> RCA cable in half so that each RCA plug would reach each speaker. Once that was done, the sound coming from my PC was awful. Static, interference, and a hum were clearly audible. OK, test the audio source. Plugged in a known good source, and everything sounds good. My PC's motherboard-integrated sound card is very bad. Something I never knew until I got these speakers.

Once attached to a proper USB audio interface using 1/4" balanced cables, these speakers sound great. No hum, no interference, no static. Just powerful nicely imaged sound.

Did I mention they are also very heavy. My only complaint with these speakers was in how they were shipped. Two individual speakers (in their boxes) were taped together with shipping tape and then packed with no additional packing into a single large box. This made it very difficult to move (it was HEAVY).
