I would only recommend buying this product if you are a somewhat handy person. It requires some coaxing to get the pieces to fit together. You have to be careful not to over tighten the screws as cheap wood will crack. Also, once I completed it, the back piece that is supposed to slide right into the slots and stay due to gravity kept falling out as the fit across wasn't tight enough (even though it's flush on the boards). It's going to take some glue and clamps.

Other than that, the tops of the steps remove completely, they are not hinged. It is also very small. I got it for my elderly cat to get up on the bed and he's a bigger cat, but it's almost too small for him. You could use it for a chihuahua sized dog, but not much else. That jack russell in the pic must be a pup because he's making them look bigger than they actually are.
Only other complaint is that it does have a cheap wood/stain odor, which does dissipate with time, but if you're sensitive to odors you'll hate it.

On the plus side, it does look far better than any other pet stairs in this price range, so I'm happy with it for the most part. It suits my needs.

It arrived mostly flat in 7 pieces to be held together with 8 screws. It claims to be solid wood (see picture), it's not like wood at all solid or otherwise. This is a manmade, formed, material, maybe wood is one of the ingredients? I would prefer this material to particle board. Forget the ad picture, there's no wood grain, not even the artificial kind. It’s a very ordinary brown, and unlike the ad eight screws shine back at you from the sides (see my picture). They should have used wood finished or at least brown screws. Opinion: this just doesn't look good enough to be in a room with other furniture. Maybe in a shop, trailer, or playhouse? At its thickest the panels are .25", and the back and bottom (their role mostly cosmetic) are .125" thick. This all goes together to be very solid in terms of the load it will bear. Mine arrived with one of the step spacers loose, I fixed it with Elmer's (see picture). Because they had sunk in two brads I had to tap my re-glued piece back in place with a mallet (so as not to mar). I then had to clamp that glued joint until dry. The brief tapping to fix the first spacer popped out the second spacer at the other end; I fixed that next. Now, after assembly and repair I have a sturdy piece, but I also have something my dogs objected to: a very slippery surface when traversing low to high or visa versa. The top of each step offered mostly no traction to a dog's nails and pads, it was slippery like a highly waxed wood floor! Aware of the problem the manufacturer put down two strips of non-skid tape to but those strips left 84% of each step's surface bare and slick. By happenstance my four-footed friends found more slippery than non-slip as their legs splayed apart in use. That slip on the first step made them leery of taking the next.Read more ›

Ok, I am keeping this ONLY because it's a pain to return things and I can probably use it for the dog to get on the sofa. It is flimsy, cheaply made, stair treds way too narrow for even a small dog, and it's not high enough to reach the bed. Did I mention very poorly made? A disappointment.

When we received the box, parts of the steps were broken off. I had to superglue them back together. They easily fell off again. The main part of the step was too slippery, and our dog would not use them. We are planning to ship it back. We bought another set at Bed Bath and Beyond that work much better. The setup required no building, and our dog can use the steps without slipping. Very disapointed in this product.

I ordered this product for my cat, who has arthritis and can't jump high enough to get on the bed. As I was opening the box, the pieces under the steps (that hold the steps in place) were falling out because they had broken off. Some areas of the "wood" were already chipped or distorted. My husband used small nails to hammer the pieces back onto the steps, and this split the wood, but worked decently enough. A couple of the steps are loose, since they are not hinged - you simply take them off to store things inside. $45 is too much to pay for this cheaply made, particle board/wood dust pile of blocks. HOWEVER, it does serve its purpose. (but barely, because the steps are narrow and make it just to the box spring)

very cheap and flimsie. It is partical board, and is made of wood dust and not real wood. Don't be faked by the photo that looks to be pine. It is not wood, does not have a wood grain look even. I am not sure my 50 dog can use this, and it would only help get her to the box spring! very sad.

Very disappointed
The quality is very poor. The wood looks sturdy but the step material is very thin. It looks like it will not hold up for any length of time. I wish I had not made this purchase.

The description states that it is "made of solid wood." That is a lie. It is made out of a composite material with a consistency between particle board and cardboard. It looks nothing like the picture. The pictures shows the grain of the wood and beaded groves. This false advertising leads the consumer to believe the steps have the strength and feel of real wood. The actual product has a solid coat of paint over its thin particle board pieces. The steps violently slip out of place if a dog tries to use them on hardwood. This was by far the worst purchase I have ever made on Amazon. I was out of the country for several months and missed the deadline to return this item.
