I bought the Alto HPA6 as an upgrade from my old Rane HC6 headphone amp. I'll start with the good things:

- For the price, the features are awesome. It's not often you find a headphone amp with individual ins and outs and multiple headphone outputs on each channel.
- The knobs and switches and lights all work properly and the unit is easy to operate. Some of the knobs seem a little flimsy but enclosure seemed sturdy and I'd have no hesitation to put it in a rack and take it on the road.

The downsides:

- The sound quality is "ok". It has a decent signal to noise ratio, plenty of volume and decent bass response. The top end to my ears was very bright, brittle and harsh, especially in the 3-5K area. This made listening super annoying and didn't accurately reflect the tone of the music I was passing through. I used 1964 custom molded in-ear-monitors, AKG reference headphones, and iPod headphones trying to figure out if I just wasn't used to the sound quality after using my Rane for so long, but in the end I couldn't sacrifice tone for money and ended up returning it. I will admit the main input channels did sound slightly better than the "aux ins" but for my application, I would be using "Aux in" exclusively.

- Another bummer is that there is no "Aux in" on the back panel, so to use the individual channel feature, you have to patch a 1/4" into the front of the unit, which is super messy especially if you have multiple items in a rack.

Overall, the Alto HPA6 offers a ton of features at an affordable price and is a pretty good value. If you're a beginner or you're on an extremely limited budget I'd recommend this headphone amp in a heartbeat, but if you're concerned about sound quality and want something that will accurately reflect the tone of your instrument, I'd recommend something a little higher end like a Rane or Furman.
