Starrett has been known for being "Made in America" with high standards for accuracy. They have cut costs and started making them overseas. This was a replacement due to losing one I bought a few years ago. Highly disappointed in what is now being produced. The clip on the back is terrible. It is cut on an angle on the bottom now so if it gets crooked when clipped to something, it tends to fall off whatever it is clipped to. The real killer now is the curve of the measuring blade. It is such a tight radius and deep curve, that it leaves barley and room when measuring for the clip to catch on the end of the board. Either the curve needs to be relaxed, or the end clip doubled in height. It is constantly coming off the edge anything you try to catch it on to measure. Third, the blade lock is not as secure as they used to be. The tape will still slide in or out with a gentle push/tug. Finally, the spring is obviously the same they use in their larger units, because it is overkill on a 16' measure. It is an accident waiting to happen at the speed and force it comes in. I will also say it is 1/8" off on a Lixer calibration tester. Not much for an average person, but when you are using calibrated saws with stops, its a big deal. Zero confidence a replacement would be any better. Look elsewhere for a tape!

I'm a professional carpenter and I've gone through MANY tape measures. This one is my favorite. I've had two of the smaller red versions of the the 16' Starrett. I liked that version but the tape would go limp after only 5 ft or so. This one stays ridgid much longer and has a smooth locking mechanism. I have the 25' version too but I prefer to keep this one on my belt as it's much lighter and less bulky.

The tape is stiff and stays like that about 10/11'. The belt clip is great and its super light. Love it.
