I run a three-monitor setup at home, all Samsung 206BW (16:10) displays from a few years ago. When one failed, I set out to replace it with a 1080p display and settled on this Dell. In short, this has turned out to be a fantastic display with very good clarity, very even backlighting and excellent color reproduction (owing to its IPS panel, vs. the TN panels in my old Samsungs). I was a little concerned about the response time as I also play games, but I notice no ghosting or lag at all during gameplay. Do note, however, that I'm not into twitch games or fighting games where ultra-low lag would be most important.

It's worth mentioning to others considering a purchase that text looked absolutely horrendous on this Dell right out of the box, which is unusual in my experience. It turns out that this was due to the monitor's "Image Enhance" feature which comes turned on by default. Turn this feature off immediately, then calibrate both color and ClearType text (if on Windows) and you should have an excellent picture.

I use this screen for casual gaming, photoshop/lightroom, web surfing, office programs and so on.

Like
- Great colors. I have my Asus UX32VD laptops 1080p IPS display to compare with - the Dell seems pretty close to that one in performance.
- Decent contrast and black value.
- Design is allright - love that the menu buttons are very discrete, but still decently accessable. You can even tell it to turn off the power indicator light while on - nice feat
- Enough options in the menus, fairly easy to set up - and then you can forget about it, because everything is to satisfaction.
- A LOT of adjustability in height and it pivots a bit (it goes vertical as well, which I don't use). Stable foot, you can't really tilt it accidentially.
- Excellent value for money
- Power use is very low (for me ~16 watt, calibrated - see bottom of review)

Dislike:
- When unplugging DVI cable, the panel power timeout is set to 5 minutes - why not 1 minute? This option can't be changed.
- As is common with IPS displays, there's a bit of backlight bleeding on black backgrounds. I don't watch movies on my screen, so it's not a dealbreaker for me.
- USB 3.0 ports would be more useful

Calibration tip for fellow owners:
Following the review of the bigbrother of this screen, the Dell P2414H, I calibrated my screen accordingly, looks a lot better and is less eyestraining, consumes even less power. You can google "Dell P2214H review tft central" to find the calibration values for the screen - it's highly recommended.

Update 2/20/2014: Some of the reviews on here and the "old hen" site suggest that Dell is using a mix of panels, and some are BGR, some RGB. There's no way to tell what you'll get when you order, but you at least you aren't guaranteed to get a "backwards" panel. (Also, it appears the P2214h is also using BGR-striped panels.)

Original review:
I just got this monitor today from another vendor on sale and think it's a good value for the price. I was initially concerned about backlight bleed after hearing about it on forums, but I noticed no such problem at all--and I looked for it. I do notice normal IPS glow which you get even on very expensive panels. It is only a problem if you turn the brightness all the way up in a dark room and sit close to it watching a black screen, and even then it's very minor. For normal day or evening work at normal distance, it's not visible.

Pros:
* No dead or stuck pixels
* No nasty flickering PWM backlight!
* IPS quality for TN price when it's on sale
* Four USB ports on the back--three sticking down and one sticking out the back (such as for a memory stick)

Cons:
* 16:9 is lame for a work monitor, but 16:10 is at least $100 more right now for non-PWM panels
* No HDMI may be a problem for some users. I use DisplayPort, and there is also DVI which can be used via an adapter cable to HDMI if needed.
* USB is 2.0, not 3.0. (No big deal if you use it for keyboard and mouse)
* Backlight is a bit uneven (right side of the panel is a bit darker)
* Backwards BGR striping order means ClearType must be calibrated (see below)

I bought this monitor to use in portrait mode and I was extremely pleased to find that its picture quality in portrait mode is exactly the same as in landscape mode, which is uncommon. The P2414H has one of the narrowest bezels available in a 24" which also lended itself well to my application. It has a business-class non-reflective screen surface which I prefer. Startup sync is nearly instantaneous via DisplayPort. Overall image quality is quite good.

I liked that the OSD can be rotated to portrait mode, although it doesn't work automatically via a rotation sensor, that would have been a nice plus. I'm using the integrated USB hub for mouse and keyboard and it works fine.

Included cables comprise a USB host-to-target for the built-in USB hub, a DisplayPort, and an analog VGA. A snap-on plastic cover is also included which masks the cable connections on the back of the monitor which helps cosmetically if people can see the back.

I would give this unit 5 stars except for some reason Dell failed to include sRGB compliance in the image presets. I notice the P2414H is Windows Logo'd, and I thought that sRGB was required for Windows logo. sRGB in presets is a quick way to set up 6500K color temperature and 2.2 gamma, so in situations where I can't use a real color calibrator I like to have sRGB preset so I don't have to fiddle with color and contrast settings. Dell supplies an ICM profile with their "monitor driver" download, but it has only one profile for "P2414H D6500" rather than multiple profiles for the different color presets available via the OSD, and it's unclear exactly what settings the ICM profile corresponds to, so it's essentially useless.Read more ›
