I ended up buying Bitdefender Total Security due to it having the highest rankings on several independent anti-virus test labs (Virus Bulletin, AV Comparatives, etc).

I upgraded from the previous 2013 version and as others have stated, it can be intrusive and show popups when your subscription is nearing its end. This was particularly annoying.

The features that Total Security has over Internet Security are just not worth it. You're better off saving your money and using third party tools.

* Anti theft - I tried out this feature and on the Bitdefender dashboard, showed me that my computer was located miles away from where it actually was. You're better off using a third party anti theft program that can accurately pinpoint your computer, as well as take pictures from your webcam (if equipped). I didn't see a way to get the IP address of where the computer was either. You're better off using "Prey" anti theft, or if your computer supports it, Absolute's LoJack for laptops.

* Identity protection - There is a free version of the identity protection which I cannot figure out how to access and keep running into pages that prompt me to upgrade to a paid subscription. You're better off signing up for Credit Karma.

* PC Optimization - You're better off using a third party program like CCleaner which does a much better job and offers a free version.

* Safebox - You get 2GB of "secure" online storage. You can get more storage for free from services like Dropbox, Google Drive, or Microsoft's SkyDrive, which all also have mobile apps.

* File Encryption - I haven't used this feature of Bitdefender, but there are many free options as well.

[NOTE] This is an update and rating change on 6/2/14 from my original review which I have left posted below for perspective. My original review rated the product as 1-star for the valid reasons stated. Through updates the manufacturer seems to have responded to the issue and none of the original issues remain. I have upped my rating to the same as the general consensus of other users, 3-stars, meaning the product does what it should in an average way. I can't see how a product that is supposed to protect one's computer against viruses and other malware can exceed the reasonable expectation of performing that task. Based on performance I would recommend that you consider this product along with the other brands available.

[ORIGINAL REVIEW] I have been using Bitdefender for about 5 years and I used to love it. The main reason I used to love it was that it was completely non-intrusive; it just caught potential threats and did what it needed to fix them, completely in the background without flashing all kinds of messages on the screen to distract me.

Not so anymore, at this point Bitdefender is by far the most intrusive software I have ever used. I use my computer a lot with full-screen apps like spreadsheets and graphic tools. Can you imagine how annoying it is to have huge ads and other popups from Bitdefender covering the lower corner of my screen over and over and over? And there's no way to turn them off, which is a major hindrance to my productivity. This year's version (2014) now brazenly opens popup windows from Bitdefender right in the center of the screen as well as in the corner, sometimes at the same time.

On top of that they spam my email box with endless offers.

I've tried this for two years now and cannot say enough bad things about it. Customer Service is NONEXISTANT. Last week, with 5 days left on my current subscription, I thought it might be a good time to upgrade. I found one of their numerous UPGRADE NOW emails and tried to renew my subscription. After putting in all the payment stuff, I pressed the make payment button and the payment screen locked up. I then got a call from my bank, with a fraud alert on my card. I informed BitDefender that their software caused my bank to call me with a Fraud alert and three days later, when they finally responded, they told me that MY BANK was at fault. Humm??? Then they told me that my software was bad (FLASH and ADOBE) and to upgrade those two???? REALLY???? So I uninstalled and updated them. Once again I tried to purchase a subscription renewal and once again, the transaction would not go through. I once again informed BitDefender and as usual, did not receive a response. I also have some oscilloscope software that BitDefender causes to terminate and the fine folks at BitDefender refuse to respond to that as well.
If you want an antivirus software that:
1. Offers NO TECHNICAL SUPPORT
2. YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO UPDATE
3. BLOCKS DEVICES THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH VIRUSES
4. SEND YOU JUNK MAIL ALL THE TIME
5. GIVES YOU POPUP’S THAT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME TO TELL YOU TO UPGRADE (even though your subscription is good for 6 more months)

then by all means, get BitDefender.

By the way, if you want to submit a technical support question (you can’t call them), like What is my key?, you have to agree to them getting a copy of your system, then it gathers a bunch of stuff about your system, into a huge file, and sends it to them.
