First of all, what a GREAT REEL for the price. I got mine off a auction website. Penn did a really good job, the reel holds a ton of line, drag is very smooth. I looked every where for a offshore reel that could hold the amount of line i wanted. the reel needed to fit my price range as well. Penn's Squall 2 50VSW fit the bill just fine, and i jumped at it. I tell you now, it was the best offshore fishing gear i invested in. I was able to land a 80+ lb Bluefin tuna that was 175 yards out when it hit. It took another 25 yards of line out before me and my buddies could start gaining on him. We landed the fish in 30 minutes or so! On to the details. I was able to spool 15-20 yards of 20lb mono as backing to keep the 700 yards of 100lb Powerpro, from slipping. On top of the braid went, 200-250 yards of Berkley Big game 80lb test mono. I paired this reel with a Daiwa Sealine Boat rod SLB56XXHF, turning it into a perfect 50-200lb class tuna setup, My opinion of course! but hey only time will tell if the squall can hold up to bigger fish, so far it held just fine vs that 80+ lber BFT.

I bought this for land based shark fishing. I wanted a reel that could handle that once in a lifetime 12ft hammer or tiger. The largest I've landed so far was a 6ft lemon shark. This reel paired with an 80lb rod made short work of the lemon. The low speed setting turns this thing into a winch. It wasn't necessary on a 6 footer, but hauling up a massive goliath grouper or shark it may come in useful. The drag is smooth and consistent (even with heavy drag under load) with no surging seen in some cheaper reels. The only downside is you'll spend just as much spooling this reel with braid as you will on the reel itself.

I have this reel on my custom Calstar GF7455XH trolling rod. They make a fantastic pair. The clicker is REALLY loud, when you get a jig strike there is no question about it. I have yet to need to drop it into low gear so far, even with 40 pound fish, high gear was no problem. I don't expect to need to drop it into low until 100 pound or larger fish are on the line. I fish it with 550 yards of 130 lb. Spectra with a 200 yard 80 lb. mono top shot. I have never gotten into the Spectra yet, just waiting for the day I hook a big one that will use that line capacity.

This will be our go to reel when buying new ones from here on out. We used it for high speed trolling for wahoo and also caught more dolphin on it than I can count. Schoolies didn't even require us to come out of trolling speed to reel them in and flip in the boat!

This reel is awesome! I loaded it up with 600+ yds of 80lb mono and had room to spare on the spool.....first time out landed a 300+ lb thresher shark. The reel performed flawlessly. Penn advertises it as an International with a graphite body....I believe it. You will not find another reel with this much fish fighting ability at this price..anywhere. 2 speeds....40 lbs max drag and a simple to use lever made the SQL50VSW my go-to reel for big fish.
I would definitely buy it again.

6/15 I have had a chance to use this reel for several trips now and just used it in a 2 day shark tournament. I am really impressed with this reel....it was hard to tell the difference between the Squall and the Internationals I used on the trip. Definitely a good buy.

First off, Great reel. Love the drag and it is very smooth. Holds more line than most 50 wides, have it rigged up with 1000 yds of 80 lb braid then 200 yrds of 100 lb mono topshot. Its handled some smaller sharks under 200 pounds really well so far. Excited to test it on some bigger fish. If your interested in buying one jump on it, great reel, great price

Don't get me wrong, I think this new Penn reel is a great substitute for the equivalent Gold reel at a fantastic price point. All of it's functionality is as advertised. What's NOT as advertised is the braid capacity. If you go on Penn's Website, the 50VSW is rated at 1835 yards of 100# braid! Wow, it was for that very reason that I jumped at the chance to own this reel. But when I unboxed the reel, it actually had 1210 yards of 100# braid stamped on it and I thought, well, that's strange....why the 625-yard discrepancy?? So, I spooled her up using a brand new 1500 yard spool of 100# Powerpro (.46mm diameter) and guess what, she took about 1300 yards/100# braid and NOT nearly the advertised, 1800 yards?! I expected to use up the whole 1500 yard spool and then some, but that would NOT be the case. But I do know I have about 1300 yards of 100# braid and together with the 40 lb. max drag, should stop anything out there short of a 1000# marlin. So Penn, while I have purchased many of your reels & poles over the past 40 years, I am very disappointed that you gave me the bum scoop. While I'll continue to use Penn products, I'll be sure to tell all my fishing friends of this major discrepancy. This is the reason why I couldn't give the new Penn Squall 50VSW, 5 Stars.

Have not tested the reel on fish but reeled my boat backwrds to where we got hooked on the reef. By how it feels it is a 2 speed good value 50 sized reel with a 40 lb drag. I am targeting ahi and ono in Hawaii with this reel.
