Routers manufactured and sold by Chinese security vendor have a hard-coded password that leaves users with a wide-open backdoor that could easily be exploited by attackers to monitor the Internet traffic.

The routers are sold under the brand name Netcore in China, and Netis in other parts of the world, including South Korea, Taiwan, Israel and United States.

According to Trend Micro, the backdoor — a semi-secret way to access the device — allows cybercriminals the possibility to bypass device security and to easily run malicious code on routers and change settings.

Netis routers are known for providing the best wireless transfer speed up to 300Mbps, offering a better performance on online gaming, video streaming, and VoIP phone calling.

The Netcore and Netis routers have an open UDP port listening at port 53413, which can be accessed from the Internet side of the router. The password needed to open up this backdoor is hardcoded into the router’s firmware.

All of the routers – sold under the Netcore brand in China and as Netis outside of the country – appear to have the same password, Tim Yeh, threat researcher at the security firm, says warning that the backdoor cannot be changed or disable, essentially offering a way in to any attacker who knows the “secret” string.

Using the backdoor, hackers could upload or download hostile code and even modify the settings on vulnerable routers in order to to monitor a person’s Internet traffic as part of a so-called man-in-the-middle (MitM) attack.

By attempting MitM attack, a potential attacker could intercept users’ internet communication, steal sensitive information and even hijack sessions.

I was researching for 802.11ac repeater and found this brand that I was unfamiliar with. I was aware that this is a router but can also act as a repeater / AP. So I thought I gave it a try.

My scenario is this. my Apple Extreme Time Machine (latest version) is in my study room and the living room is about 50 feet away from lots of materials that bounce around the signal, so the HD streaming is stuttering from my NAS in the study room. I used to use the old Apple Extreme router (in bridge mode as a repeater) but since it could only do "N", so 300 Mbps is the upper limit.

The setup for this Netis router is a mixed feeling. I can tell that the setup for the folks who don't already have a router is a breeze, but to set it up as a repeater / range extender is tedious. I had to mess around the network and wireless settings multiple times to get it to work successfully. I guess the most challenging part, was the installation guide does not provide any guidance to set it up for anything else but a router. The manufacturer's website is a joke. I've looked up all the FAQs and found nothing relevant. But after I set it up, everything works fine. Great range, good clean transmission. No more stuttering when streaming.

My advice is this. IF you just want to use it as a router, by all means, go for it. You're likely to have luck with it. However, if you are not technical, and you want to set it up as a range extender, there are better / easier choice elsewhere. Granted you have to pay more of course.

My rating for this unit is based on:

5 stars for stable and clean connection
3 stars for user setup simplicity.
5 stars for price / value / performance
1 star for poor documentation and unhelpful website.

Average is THREE stars.

If my review is helpful, please kindly rate it so I will continue to write more. Thank you.

James

The reviews for this product are pretty right on. The only thing I noticed was it had high ping times (pinging the router from my MacBook wifi), probably anywhere from 3ms to 100ms at intervals. I played around with the 5Ghz settings, didn't help. Even disabled 2.4Ghz, still no go. What you need to do is download the latest firmware updates and install them. After this, ping times maintained around 3ms on wifi at 5Ghz connection. I did set my speed to just N for the time being. Also to note, I use this router as an AP only, not as a router. It works great and I'm satisfied with it. Coverage is great in my 1200sq foot apartment and I have this thing centered.

I've been setting up wireless routers for friends and family for a while and have always recommended Linksys because of the reliability. So when a friend requested that I purchase and setup the Netis N600, I was a bit skeptical. The price was too good to be true and the company hadn't been well established in the networking/IT world. Glad I took the leap of faith.

The setup instructions were so easy, I was able to do it through my Android browser. After securities have been established, I like to roam the residence to check connection strength and speeds. At the very edge of the stated range, the router was still able to reach max bandwidth. I also like to see what happens when multiple devices jump on and off the network to see if I have to cycle power to reassign addresses. Not once did that happen after an hour of testing. And thanks to the simultaneous dual band, the connection's jitter is next to nothing.

The Netis N600 is highly recommended to anyone willing to take a chance on a different brand. It's well worth it.
