Software is okay. Just your usual Microsoft upgrade. Personally I would try to use whatever original os version be it xp vista or 7 until support for that os stopped. I only get the latest version software from Microsoft when buying a new pc anyways. Seems silly to me buy just another reiteration of what I already have.

More into productivity and using a true browser as apps/live tiles lower quality and function overall but others have already stated that.

Found it hard to deep search for files that were malicious such as spyware. Clearing caches was also more difficult, a trend that is likely to continue. Manually editing the register was less effective as previous versions making it harder to avoid online traps.

Eventually I would wish to multi boot with windows 7 ultimate, w8.1 pro, w10, ubuntu or arch linux distro, and hackingtosh.

With windows watering down each subsequent release putting graphics and style over function sometimes it makes me think," what do I have to give up with this upgrade?".

Was a long time user on media player so was sad to see the prevalence of cloud services influencing MS to take away native support for a lot of media types especially video and bluray. Bluray was better on 7. Their change to be like Apple really hurt their image as a do everything OS. Google already has its goofy cloud/browser os so don't really find trusting computing and drm beneficial. I seem to get logged out of accounts that I have paid media in. Which also makes me hesitant to use Amazon Kindle services. But I really do like reading on my phone so it's hard for me to take a stance.

8.1 is much better than 8.0. Overall I still like Windows 7 but this works. They should make the activation key larger for old people. I had lots of trouble reading it even with a magnifying glass. I blame Microsoft for this!!! Otherwise, it installed fine. I don't like the way it handles Skype. My username in Skype is one name and it works in Windows 7 and it works in Linux but will not work in Windows 8. I had to change my name in Skype to my hotmail account for it to work. Now I lost all my contacts when I am in Skype on Windows 8. It's good that 8.1 allows running a dual boot with Linux.

OUCH $%^&*(% Microsoft Packaging sucks
I ordered the 32 bit version by mistake.
However adding insult to injury, nothing obvious indicated it was a 32 bit version on the Microsoft packaging.
End result, I had to open the package and remove the disk before seeing the DISK label identified it was 32-Bit.
Can't return it at that point and I had to purchase a 2nd OS 64 bit version for another $133 (Total Cost of my OS $266)
