As impressive as this light is compared to 40 and 50 dollar headlamps, I would not recommend anything less powerful for serious outdoor activities like caving, running, or biking. I think this brightness should be the bare minimum for such outdoor activities.

I used it exclusively on the brightest, "maxbright" HIGH spotlight setting. It was used in several caves so far and I'm very pleased. Walking behind some fellow cavers, I was able to light up their path as well. In fact, this light was so bright compared to their 20 dollar energizers that when the apex was on, I could not tell if their lights were on or off! I was able to walk much quicker and navigate some dangerous terrain with confidence.
Even on the "maxbright" LOW spotlight, this light outshines the 40 dollar 'Tikka XP' lamps.

Only complaint is the brightness level of the 4-led floodlight. In situations where you need to tread carefully, I would not recommend using it on the floodlight settings. The floodlight setting may be suitable for walking around your campsite or searching for your tools at night.

While spelunking, this lamp overcame high humidity, fog, dripping water, brief submersion, direct contact with a waterfall, and a couple bumps on rocks. I used it with Eneloop batteries on the highest setting, and after an hour in caves it did not even dim.

***(keep in mind the burn time is only 1 hour of REGULATED power. After an hour, the brightness is said to spike as the juice in your batteries run out. The 72 hour claim is just plain deceptive. In the manual, it explains all this)

If you want the same brightness but more burn time, get the Apex Extreme.

I purchased a TecApex in 2009 and recently it stopped working. I went back on Amazon to purchase another and After seeing other reviewers write about the life time warranty, I figured I'd send it to Princeton and see if they honored it. I spoke with customer service who issued an RMA and I mailed it back to them. I also purchased a new one, this time with RED leds as this headlamp is my favorite. After a couple weeks, Princeton honored their lifetime warranty and replaced my 4+ year old TecApex with a new one. Any company that offers and honors a lifetime warranty gets five starts from me!

This is my second Apex 275 - the first lasted me eight tough years of everything from automotive/motorcycle maintenance/repairs, to professional field work around the country. I've seen thousands of cheapo headlights and always laugh at them: "that's not a headlight...THIS is a headlight!

No joke, this is a proper headlight that drowns all others out.

I have something of a headlamp fetish. I have owned >6 different types and this is by far the best one. The amount of light you get on the high setting is incomparable and the 4 AA batteries provide plenty of life. It is also quite comfortable. I routinely wear it for hours while working in the house or on one of my vehicles. It is also quite durable. I have it for >3 years and it is still going strong. I am not sure if it is really waterproof though. I would describe it as water resistant. I think it would hold up to splashes and light rain but I would not take it scuba diving.

The main beam is very nice -- stronger and wider than my Petzl Myo. The heavy battery pack seems like it will be good for delivering longer hours than the Myo, but it IS noticeably heavy. (I might opt more often for light Li batts.) The side-LEDs seem dumb. I've seen them reviewed as 'good floods.' --Not. Perhaps they are nice for giving a slightly wider (but dim) lighting area in a close space -- but not really usable for wide light beyond, like, 6 feet away or at a walking pace. The LEDs also are blue toned -- yuck. The main beam is nicely white.

I bought this light to be a hopefully better light than the Myo for biking and skiing. I've used Petzls for maybe 10 yrs. (I also sometimes use a cheap Chinese superpower light, which is strong but too spotty and its head-mount is very sketchy.) So far the Apex comes out on top. Not a huge improvement, though. But probably significantly better than my beloved Myo. I use rechargeable batts and I keep using them for years, so they become wimpier over time. The Myo with 3 batts ends up having quite a short run-time -- maybe only an hour of going strong -- which is a concern during outings so I've been bringing extra batts with me. Hopefully the Apex will give more solid hours per set of 4 wimpy batts.

At mtbiking distance the Apex main beam is about 6 feet diameter. Petzl is maybe 4 feet, and less bright. But w/ reg batts the PT weighs a LOT more than the Myo -- almost to the point of being a 'not what you want on your head' sort of weight, and the little side LEDs seem SO USELESS AS TO BE ANNOYING. Good gear should have nothing in excess. Lastly, the battery pack comes out with difficulty and there is no handle for it so you have to kind of torque it out by the wire-attachment: BAD. Hopefully it'll loosen over time.
