Initially I had wanted to get the Magnus VPH-20 Video Pan & Tilt Fluid Head (50USD) but prime shipping wasn't available and I needed it within 3 days to take on a trip. There were no reviews at that time for the Magnus head. I was glad I found this unit instead which was half the price.

First impressions: box label shows "designed in Wyoming, made in China." Construction and material appears to be very solid. Except for the 2 thumbscrew knobs, the pan/tilt handle grip, and the quick release plate latch, the unit is made of metal (not sure if it's iron or steel alloy but b/c of its weight, I'm quite sure it's not aluminum). The fore-mentioned pieces are hard plastic. Finish is smooth, no rough or uneven edges. No documentation is included in the box. I went to Grifiti's website and there's no explicit warranty mentioned for this product. The implied warranty is that you can return the item up to 365 days if it's defective. However, nothing is mentioned whether you'll get a pro-rated refund or replacement -- buyer be aware.

The pan and tilt mechanism are firm, but consistent -- not jerky at all. Hopefully over time and repeated use it could loosen a bit. Even if it doesn't I'm still OK with it. The firmness of the tilt mechanism holds the camera in place -- even at an angle it's not prone to droop down (unless you're using a heavy long lens). Note this is a medium wt head, not meant for heavy lenses. The pan (degree) markings are painted on rather than etched or molded on the metal. There are no markings for the tilt angle.
[UPDATE 8-Oct-2014: Used it to shoot the lunar eclipse last nite along with a m4/3 100-300mm lens.

I have been using this for a month now and have put it through its' paces. Here is my quick review.

PROS:
∙ It is very stable, and holds my older DSLR camera into any position I lock it into.
∙ The knobs hold position well once you tighten them correctly. Just add a wee bit more force than you think you'll need, and it'll hold.
∙ It moves fluidly, and is easy to position.
∙ It performs as well as some of my more expensive equipment.

CONS:
∙ The two bubble levels are more horrid than they look, and are nearly worthless. You have more of a chance guessing if your tripod is level, than trying to read the bubble level itself. The look cheap, perform cheaply, and their only function is to add a couple of ounces of weight. Did I mention they are cheap and screwed on with cheap screws?
∙ The position of the bubble levels make them difficult if not impossible to use. The one on the side is positioned nicely, but is about as useless as a big toe on the back of your neck. The one on the front is simply just in the wrong place. You would think they would have placed it in the back of the pan head (where the photographer is more likely to stand) rather than in the front where the subject is, especially if your subject is lower than the lens.
∙ The overall "feel" of the pan head says "cheap" which is just a little deceptive compared to how it actually functions.
∙ It is too small compared to the pan head I replaced with this, and looks a little comical on a 60" or larger tripod.

While the initial impression I got from the head was "too small" and "cheap" -- the overall function made it worth the price.

Attached it to my vivitar tripod and the rest to say is history. Works perfectly with my tripod. Used a screw driver to tighten it down and started producing videos. Nice addition to my camera family.

It is solidly built and I too was surprised with the quality of the item. The reducer mentioned in the product description is already screwed into the mount so you can just use a dime to remove it if you need to. My problem is that the unit is really tight. It's difficult to tilt it up and down without applying a lot of force and there's no way to adjust that tension so I probably won't be using it that much except for maybe doing videos. I initially wanted to use it for a spotting scope to spot birds for clients but you need a really fast moving head for that before the bird flies away. With the tight tilt, that won't be possible.

I bought this to be able to use on a DSLR slider. I figured this was the best Tripod head for the money. But it does have one problem that it makes it almost useless. The turning points for up and down, and left to right are very stiff. You can't change direction on the plane unless you put a lot of strength into it. That is what almost makes it useless. These tripod heads are useful to have great shots while using a slider, if you can move the tripod head up and down and left to right smoothly.

Compact and ultra compact tripods often come with ball heads. Ball heads are generally smaller than pan heads and are often quicker to aim (if you get it right in three dimensions the first time), but can be difficult to do fine adjustments with. I've tried most of the compact pan heads around and have found that this head to work better, especially on ultra compact tripods). I now own three of them.

In fairness, it should be possible to improve on this design for ultra compact tripods by reducing its diameter at the attachment point to the tripod and narrowing the head and shoe, but nobody has done that as yet (at least that I've seen.
