I decided to use this drapery rod to upgrade an old one rod in a spare room. Though better than what I had, this rod gets a "C+" / average grade from me based on the following:

Ease of installation: "A" - The instructions call for a pencil, power drill, and a manual Phillips screw driver. Though I could have asked my husband to help me, I decided to use only my "lady's tool box" (no power drill) and my elbow grease. From start (unpacking) to finish (discarding the packaging material), it took me about an hour, including removing the existing hardware. Surely, had I enlisted the help of someone more experienced and/or used a power drill, the time to just install the rod would have been no more than 10 minutes.

Instructions: "B" - The instructions were detailed and the only thing not obvious (to me) was the front/back of the back plates (Step#3). Turns out I put the 1st one on backwards & had to redo it. Tip: You need to be able to see the word Umbra after attaching the back plate to the wall.

Function: "A" - wrapping the edges of the drapes around to close off light from the sides works as expected, at least with the drapes I hung

Quality: "C" - I have 4 other sets of wrap around drapery rods in other rooms and sturdiness/diameter of those rods is much more suitable for hanging drapes that are often heavy. For light weight drapes and curtains, it will probably do fine.

Color: "F"ail - The color isn't at all what I expected for Auburn Bronze, which should have reddish and bronze hues with some shine. The rod I got has a dark chocolate color and a flat/matte color. From a distance and once installed, it almost looks black.Read more ›

Unlike a lot of wrap around rods that have the bracket screw horizontal to each other this one is vertical which will resist the torque of someone pulling on the drapes (kids) better. Like most curtain rods, the hardware is total crap. Do not use the anchors. Do yourself a favor and buy some decent self drilling anchors which are way sturdier. Use the screws that came with it on your own anchors or test the screws that your anchor comes with to make sure the head is shallow enough to slide the rod over.

Some people said they were hard to install. Not even a little bit. Did it by myself. Measure, level, install brackets, slide on. What's so difficult?

First things first, I used 28 to 48-Inch model for a window frame that is 46.5 inches across. It ended up working great for me, but I still wanted to mention a few things…

For those of you that are like me and have never put up a curtain rod before, please note that there is usually metal that goes out about 1 inch all the way around the window frame. The first hole I tried to drill, I hit metal, woops! So just make sure you drill far enough out to make sure you can make it through the drywall. This also may affect your measurements, because if your window frame is 48 inches, you may actually need more like 50 inches, so that would put you up into the next 48-88 inch model. The only downside to getting the bigger one is that it costs more, other than that; it should increase the rigidity of the curtain rod.

My goal was to block out as much sunlight as possible because I like to sleep in on the weekends so I needed a curtain rod that allowed the curtains to wrap around the side. I first ended up trying light blocking curtains from walmart that were ranked “best” on their good, better, best scale; and they were complete garbage. I then tried these ones: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AFA5LI/ref=oh_details_o00_s01_i08?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and I can say that they are better at blocking light than any other curtains I’ve ever seen. I know this will make me sound like a vampire, but even with this wraparound curtain rod and these amazing curtains, some light still manages to come out of the top. There is a gap between the curtain rod and the wall, if anyone has a suggestion to remedy this, it would be greatly appreciated.Read more ›

This is substantial enough that I didn't put in the middle brace across a span of 75". It's not super heavy-duty and the curtain panels I was hanging weren't heavy either; still it's much sturdier than a cafe rod or the standard white rod and it looks great. I like the wrap-around feature and the depth is enough to go around the valance above the blinds. I also loved the fact that the plastic ring on the edge of one rod (to protect the curtains when pushing through the rod pocket) is actually fixed to the rod and stays in place.

Installation was not quite as pleasing. The hardware comes with plastic wall anchors and although that's standard I wanted to use molly bolts (hollow wall anchors). To do that, the installer had to screw in the molly bolts to grab the wall, then remove those screws and put in the original (flat-head) screws so the rod would slide over the bracket. Sliding onto the bracket is also a tricky operation, so I highly recommend having two people to do it. If you use hollow wall anchors, make sure the anchors you buy match the size of the original screws. One at the top is sufficient; you can use the plastic anchor on the bottom if you like (or just the screws in a stud). Be careful about the orientation of the bracket (vertical and which side faces the wall). Not quite as obvious as other types.
