This is a great album that deserves wider recognition. I must say, however, that Joe's earlier releases on the Fania label from 1967-72 are even better: "Gypsy Woman," "Singin' Some Soul," "Mr. New York & the East Side Kids," "Poor Boy," "Riot" and "Subway Joe" among others are all some of the coolest Latin Soul albums in existence.

Five EXCITING Stars. "Salsoul" is a great recording from the 'Hey Day' of composer, arranger, musician, and singer Joe Bataan, the self-proclaimed Afro-Filipino, who enjoyed great success on the east coast and had a number of singing and instrumental hits in the 1970s, such as his latin-disco instrumental version of Gil Scot-Heron's "The Bottle". These vocal and instrumental performances, mixing salsa and soul musical influences, retain their considerable rhythmic attractiveness in the 21st Century because of their infectious beats, engaging lyrics, great musicianship, and his messages about love and life that resonate quite well, 40 years later. The unidentified sextet of guitar, bass, drum, congas, trombone, and flute is excellent, as are the arrangements. The `best of the best' begins with a latin-jazz vocal version of the Johnny Mathis classic hit "When Sunny Gets Blue" with Bataan exploring both the lyrics and rhythm with a great deal of excitement, backed by a great trombone solo and a great interlude break. Two marvelous instrumentals with great arrangements are the uptempo "Latin Strut" driven by the flutist stating the theme, but the guitar solo and the drummer really push it along; and "Aftershower Funk" is taken at a laid back tempo with the guitarist again dominating the proceedings, with the drummer rising to the fore winding the tempo down for the guitarist's solo. In all, a great album combing salsa and soul in the Joe Bataan `salsoul' musical style. And the icing on this musical cake is Joe's ode to world peace: "Peace, Friendship, Solidarity". Highly Recommended. Five EXCITING Stars! (10 tracks; Time-41:37. Note the MP3 hyperlink is not working as of this review date.)

Imagine. It's 1972 an you're strolling (or sneaking)around the ghetto area in New York. This is what you'de hear. Brilliant from start to finish, Aftershower Funk and Latin Strut are timeless classics.Lots of synchopated rythmic drums and wah-wah guitar overload. This is his first and undoubtedly best work before he cashed in on disco. Forget the rest, this is the one you want.

Have always loved this Album now I have it on CD. Reminds me of my time in Brooklyn back in the early 70's
