Why did you choose this rating?
* Because the sound quality is top-notch

What did you like or dislike?
* Like the sound signature and comfort
* Dislike the price

Who would you recommend this to?
* Anyone looking for a sealed equivalent of the Sennheiser HD650 (neutral and laid-back).

Now that I've answered Amazon's list of questions, follow is my short review...
I'd start off by saying these cans sound just like the Sennheiser HD650. Yes, I was really surprise when I first tried them on. The SRH1540 has the same sound signature as the HD650. If Shure had replaced their logo on the headphone with just a letter 'S', I would have thought that it was a Sennheiser product; a refresh of the famous HD650.

So why did I purchase the SRH1540? Because I own an HD650, and was looking for a sealed equivalent. As you all know, HD650 is an open can, and they're only good for home private listening. I was looking for a way to keep the music private in the public, but retain the same sound quality as the HD650. After reading numerous reviews on closed cans, I had finally decided on the SRH1540.

I'll spare you all from long boring reviews. I'll just confirm that most (trusted source) reviews you'll read on the SRH1540 are accurate.

Here's a quick run down...
The SRH1540 had more sub-bass compare to the HD650. And its bass is a bit loose. Approximately about +3db to +5db boost. But its expected from a closed can.
The midrange is excellent, close to being the HD650. Very smooth, silky, and grain free mids. The HD650 is still the king of midrange.
The upper mid is a bit boosted compare to the HD650, but only by a very small amount (about +1db).

After having used Klipsch X10i for two years now, I decided that it's time to change to a headphone since the cables on the X10i started to harden. Did some searching and initially decided on ATH-M50x from Audio Technica due to its overwhelming reviews.

Went down to a store nearby that sells almost any headphone you can think of, and they let you test it too. After testing the ATH-M50x for a while, decided that it's not good enough and then tested all sorts of other headphone in that store. Sat there proudly at a corner was this beauty Shure SRH1540. Looks kindda big and heavy but when I picked it up, it was surprisingly light and comfortable on the head due to its firm clamping force and the Alcantara ear pads.

Hit the play button on my iPhone and was immediately stunned by the sound it produces. Instrument separation was excellent, drum beats are kicking, vocals are crystal clear and soundstage was great too. I have never heard an open back headphone before but this closed back headphone makes my X10i sounded like a toy!

Bought the SRH1540 back home with me without any hesitation despite the price difference between this and the ATH-M50x. I have it for almost a month now and I am listening to it almost every day alternating between the X10i and SRH1540. Alternating between these two, I noticed something that I am used to in the X10i and still have not gotten used to in the SRH1540.

That's the presentation of vocal. in the X10i, vocal seemed "forward" sounding while in the SRH1540, it sounded a little bit "distant". Maybe it's me who got to get used to the sound signature of the SRH1540? I am not sure but in all other departments, the SRH1540 beats the X10i so I am sticking to the SRH1540.

Disclaimer: I am in no way associated with Shure or any other company. My opinions are mine, and my own. I purchased them through Sweetwater, not amazon, but as many come here for reviews I thought I would add mine.

Pro: Offering exceptional fidelity and comfort with a brilliant construction and thoughtful extras the Shure 1540 is a headphone that is not easily bested.

Cons: With a rather steep price tag it can be a large pill to swallow for someone hesitant to take the leap.

Overall: The new Shure closed flag ship is a major contender to the headphone market. I believe it to be one of, if not the best closed back headphone on the market. It brings superb comfort with an above average imaging and sound-stage that makes it hard to put down. It is simply a joy to listen too.

The Shure 1540 is the first headphone I have come across in my budding audiophile career that seems to check almost all the boxes. I have had the absolute pleasure listening to them. I have had friends listen to them (one who never seems to see the difference in my headphones). She instantly remarked when I took them out of the box "those look like really nice headphones." A moment later I played a song and had her listen. Her comment was, "okay yeah these do sound really good." I feel this puts these in a nut shell. The just sound and feel so right. I will break down this review into several topics. If you want a streamlined version I will have a numerical breakdown listed below (for those impatient readers!).

Sound: The sound I can best describe as something like a Nike swoosh. It has a bump in the bass (but controlled) and a slight spike in the upper treble to give it some sparkle.
