Wow... The Onion... as usual... leaves no group untouched. If you are easily offended you will NOT be happy with this book! However, if you can see this book for what it is... humor (and a great deal of it very off-color)... you will love it. If you are familiar with the Onion online, then you'll know exactly what to expect. If you buy it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, but be warned... there are no taboos in terms of this book. Thanks for taking the time to read my review.

This compendium is hilarious! Entries on historical events and persons, current ones, random words and phrases. Pick it up and start reading anywhere. I guarantee that if you like satire and parody you will grin, giggle or occasionally roll on the floor chortling.

Some of this is really enjoyable, dry wit. Some of it is so ridiculous that it is funny. Some of it is just potty humor, so it may appeal to a wide range of people. Don't leave it lying around where any of your sensitive friends or relatives can get hold of it, unless you want to offend them so much that they will never visit you again. Still, if you need a laugh, this book can provide it. Much of it is insulting to the reader and gives you a chance to laugh at yourself. I've enjoyed seeing some of the twisted stuff compiled in this book. It has been good for some laughs.

I was looking for coffee table books for my new apartment and came across this book while browsing Amazon's huge collection of hardcover books. The Onion Book of Known Knowledge is absolutely hilarious. There is an entry for almost anything you can think of from "crumbs" to "Steve Jobs" to "jupiter." Each entry is funnier than the next and all are well-written. The book has been an outstanding conversation starter and is a favorite amongst our friends and family.

Bottom line, everyone should have this book.

Brilliant idea for a book, funny entries (many with intelligent twists and punchlines), and fantastic mileage in terms of amusement and laughter that the book will induce from you. You will also feel that a group carefully crafted and vetted each entry, rather than have one person trying hard to fill-in pages with duds in-between good entries. The illustrations are great too. And nice props to the all-powerful Filipinos!
I suggest though that you dont consume more than 5 entries in one sitting. If you read more than 5, there will be a tendency for you to always wait for a punchline in the end, so the enjoyment is somewhat spoiled. The wisecrack might not strike its full effect, compared to when you ration the book. You might also miss the intended irony in some entries in the process. So, just open the encyclopedia from time to time and randomly scan for an interesting person or event, perhaps during a break from reading a novel.

I am a fan of understated humor, overstated humor, subtle humor, humor in general, and sarcasm-however-I will warn the overly sensitive by stating that some of the material can be offensive. Don't leave it around for the kiddies. Must be a fan of great wits such as Mark Twain or towering intellectuals like Don Rickles and Sponge Bob Squarepants. Proceed at your own risk.

Well, to be honest I was going to give this to my brother-in-law for Christmas until my sister said, "Oh he might like it, I don't know." That's when I thought, "Oh well the hell with him, I KNOW I will like/love it" so, it stayed home with me. I have been reading the Onion for quite a while and I love the absurdity of it all. I read it before bedtime for a good laugh. I can't wait until my son gets old enough to read it. No one in my immediate circle of friends understand why I love this so much. Maybe time for new friends?!? Anyway, if you enjoy a good laugh get this book it's a very good read.
