UPDATE: The video, mentioned below, is now uploaded but only shows this machine in action, not the others that I compared it to. There is a limit for file size (for obvious reasons :)) here on Amazon so I edited what I had and isolated just Laura Ashley CX155LA. To save a lot of time, testing and and frustration, it would have been nice to see the machines in action prior to purchasing! I hope you enjoy the video and that it helps with your decision.

I began the sewing machine purchase process by buying 2 machines, the PRW7070 and a Singer Fashion Mate. I already own the 6000i and my Mom has the Janome Magnolia 7325. We need some additional machines in our studio for teaching sewing lessons. I did as much research as I could but was frustrated when the information from the manufacturer was not accurate. This review is a bit long but I found that I wanted more information, rather than less when purchasing my machines.

I bought the PRW7070 and the Singer on Black Friday for a good discount but had to return the Singer after just 10 minutes because the bobbin case was loose so the stitching was way off. At that point I also noticed that despite the fact that the Brother website clearly states that the PRW7070 has needle up/down, it does not. Frustrated, I ordered in, wait for it.... four more sewing machines. I decided to pit them against one another and keep the best two. I made two classes for comparison. The under $250 class and the $250-$500 class. This review focuses on the under $250 class.

After two weeks of heavy testing, the clear winner was this wonderful, feature packed machine that does so much more than the other machines in the same class. Here are the results.

Strength Test: I took 12 ounce denim and layered it.

This "special edition" Brother has a lot to offer, including 155 stitches and an extra-large extension table. This alone (at this price) make it a serious contender for the budget-minded sewist who wants a lot for a little. Price ranges under four hundred are considered budget or entry-level machines, but the Laura Ashley CX155LA has so much, I would not hesitate to recommend it over my several gold standards, including my Janome Decor which costs double and has far fewer features than this machine. If you don't want to spend a lot, this is a fantastic choice for a do-all machine.

It has 100 regular and decor stitches and 55 lettering stitches. That is a lot--lets you do all kinds of decorative sewing. If you want to do machine heirloom stitching (like smocking and "French Handsewing" look, there are a multitude of suitable stitches like feather stitch, a variety of smocking cross stitches and ladder stitch for insertions. Sewing these over tear-away or wash-away stablizer lets you create delicate lingerie, baby clothes, christening gowns and other fancy items.

DO you need all those extra stitches? I'd say, yes, if you want to do almost-embroidery or if you quilt, because these decorative stitches can be used in combination with each other to create heirloom-like sewing, to embellish seam lines, or to actually create your own decorator fabrics, by stitching combinations of decor stitches in rows in different colors of thread. You can make pillows, bedspreads, curtains, placemats, napkins, table runners, Christmas decorations and not have to buy an expensive embroidery machine and have the ease of use.

For utility sewing, it handled thick fabric ok.

I love this machine! It is my first that is entirely my own (not my mothers or grandmothers, etc.). It sews exceptionally straight, and has a lot of wonderful features. I have yet to use the button feature, but I assume it will be as good as the rest of the machine. The machine without the quilting table is large enough to be substantial, but not in the way. The free arm is small enough to be more than manageable. It's not too heavy, but also doesn't feel horribly plastic-y cheap. The gears/motor has help up through stitching the 6 layers or so of satin that I've put though it (thickest item I've sewed on this machine yet). The computerized functions are very easy to learn and to adapt to. It warns you when you are doing things that will cause a problem; it will not allow you to sew with the presser foot up. This is not a problem for me, but I could see it being a problem for others.

The downside: it does not come with a case at all. The addition of a case would be nice.

When my 6268 Singer went out on me after 30 years, and my SE400 stopped embroidering neatly about the same time, I resigned myself to upgrading to a Brother Embroidery 770 (so far so good) but I still needed a general sewing machine. On a whim I purchased the Singer 9970. The automatic threader doesn't work on it; my fabric had an annoying habit of being sucked down into the bobbin race. I WAS pleased with the utility and character stitching plus the overall functionality of the 9970 so I haven't yet chucked it out the window! I make cloth dolls and clothes for the dolls. Simply, I needed a reliable machine that was reasonable in price yet did what I needed it to do. Red is my favorite color so I stopped and took a second look at the 155LA and decided on the purchase after reading the reviews on the web. So far, the auto threader is working and my fabric isn't trapped in the zigzag opening of the needle plate. Not once! So this machine had me at THAT! I still wish there was a straight stitch plate. Brother has one that looks like it would fit the Laura Ashley. I'm going to try it out since I can get a refund if it doesn't work out. I'll let you know. I've only put Laura thru half her paces and she gets an A from me! I recommend Laura to the beginning and intermediate sewist and those that buy hard and sew soft like me.
