This does state 'Made in China' on the box it comes in, and a small sticker on the handle. BUT, as tape guns go this is the best. Update 9-28-14: Still highly recommended as I have never had a problem with this. It works amazingly well and shows no sign of wear.

I have tried the following tape guns, and tape boxes almost daily:

1) Scotch 3M, no frills at all but OK! #3 in my mind but a close 2nd. Works OK but not great. Costco purchase.
2) Scotch 3M with tension knob and nice, but unused, fold-down blade protector - the worst gun, #4. Often wrinkles my tape and I throw a lot away. Costco purchase.
3) Duck Brand with nice padded handle and tension adjuster, comes with very thin (like saran wrap) tape but works very well, and has no frills but the handle and one time adjusted (MAYBE) tension adjuster. My 2nd choice. As an aside, I am looking forward to the 3.1 mil Duck brand tape (8 pack). This comes with a small roll of very thin, but sticky, tape. Comes with a cutter-protector that has to come off and would likely stay off and get lost.
4) This Tach-it MN2 is my favorite and is a great price. It has a tension adjuster, and a very nice fold-down tape-guide for loading, and it works non-frustratingly. It is mostly plastic but I think this is very nice, as tape guns go. Update: The Duck Brand thicker tape IS much better than 3M.

I recommend, would buy again, and I hope this helps someone.

Be sure you load the tape in the right direction; that would be sticky side out at the cutter. I knew a person that always loaded a tape gun sticky-side against the front roller wheel and they switched it back and remained frustrated after I had corrected its position. I do not know why this has a bumpy flat surface just above the handle; it does not move. It is the flat ribbed area seen in the photo and tape does not come near it.

This is a top quality tape gun. A lot of manufacturers throw around the term "Heavy Duty" labeling it on all kinds of garbage, so it has really lost it's meaning. However this tape gun is as good as it gets. I think "Industrial Duty" better describes this item. I offer my qualifications as a tape gun reviewer; I have worked in a very large distribution center for 6 years, and spent months running a department packaging online orders to customers. My employer isn't as big as Amazon, but everyone has heard of them. I have spent 10 hours operating a tape gun at times. I know a good tape gun as soon as I pick one up.

So I purchased this tape gun because it looked very similar to the new batch we had received at work (the best ones yet) which came from ULine, and someone on here said their tape gun was made in Italy which the ones I have used were. Also, this thing is a dirt cheap bargain at 10 bucks! Well the one I got says nothing about it's origins on the tape gun itself but it did have a tiny "Made in Taiwan" sticker on the box it came in. No big deal, the quality is clearly there. In fact this tape gun is BETTER than the ULine ones, because those have one fatal flaw. If the operator is of the temporary employee variety it seems that they always attempt to unscrew the tension knob in order to change out the tape. What happens next is the little spring flies across the room, never to be seen again and now you have a paper weight. This tape gun has a little clip on the end which prevents the tension knob from being completely removed unless you really want to. Perfect! Clearly these people know how to make a good tape gun. I am like another reviewer in that I have been doing shipping for a long time and I have taped many boxes. I have used the 3m tape dispensers that you can buy at Off Depot as well as the cheapest ones they sell. This tape gun here is by far the highest quality gun I have used. The craftsmanship is excellent. The other 3m type guns are made so that when you put pressure on the "tape smoother" it is suppose to raise the teeth to cut the tape. Those ALWAYS fail at some point and get all gummed up. This tape gun has both the teeth and "tape smoother" in a fixed position which I like much better (one less thing to break!). However, after using this gun I would be highly surprised if anything ever broke. For $10.50 you can absolutely not go wrong by purchasing this tape gun. You will be very happy with your purchase. I purchase heavy duty shipping tape from eSupplyStore dot com and I am very happy with the heavy duty tape from there. Just passing on as FYI.

Pro: I have purchased these many times before from local packaging company for many years. We go though about 6 of these tape guns a year. They are used in warehouse and we go though about 1300 rolls of 2"x110yd tapes a year. These are hearty dispensers and the only one on the market that would last so long.
Con: Reason for 4 star is due to the unfortunate weakness of swipe down blades. If you have a heavy hand, these swipe down blades will snap in half quickly. Another reason is lack of replacement parts can be found. If someone sells replacement swipe down and cutting blade that fits this tape gun, please share.
Other thoughts: If you don't use tape gun often, you will find this gun to be a bit on the heavy side.
