This is a great add-on for DSLR users that are looking for better audio quality when recording video. The TM-2X draws power from the camera, so it does not need batteries or an external power source.

Audio quality is good and very directional thanks to its cardiod mics. The microphones can be adjusted up and down to find the best position for picking up your subjects, and they're on a shock mount to prevent unwanted noises while moving or handling the camera. Because the mics are so directional subjects sound best directly in front of the microphone - sound from the sides and behind will be much lower.

The included mounting bracket moves the microphone further away from the camera lens, reducing the amount of autofocus motor sounds on the final video. It doesn't eliminate those noises entirely but it does make a difference over my camera's internal microphone. A fuzzy "deadcat" is also included to cut down on wind noise when out doors.

You'll want to check first to ensure that your DSLR does have a microphone input prior to purchasing. But I am quite pleased with the performance of this microphone, especially considering it doesn't require any form of external power. It will certainly improve the stock audio quality of your DSLR or video camera without having to add additional gear.

The onboard microphone in your DSLR is good enough for capturing family outings but if you hope to share your work publicly, one of the first things that you will have to do is improve the quality of your audio. This is where the TM-2X comes in. Using the same excellent condenser microphones that they use on their PCM recorders, Tascam has put them in a nicely isolated shock mount that connects to the hot shoe of your DSLR to replace the built-in microphone. As you'll see in the video, the sound is like night and day.

This little external microphone is ideal for me and the short videos I make from time to time. Although the main component is plastic, the noise isolation arm as seen in the photograph easily attaches to the camera's horseshoe mount on both my Nikon D7000 and my Canon 7D and into my mic plug. The noise isolation arm can be set aside and the microphone attached directly to the horseshoe mount. The improved audio is quite noticeable. I use the enclosed filter as well to cut back on background noise.

This is an ideal microphone for the videographer-hobbyist. The price is right for this device. This is now part of my camera bag!

Give your videos a professional touch by improving the audio - so often overlooked in amateur video production.

This unit is high-grade plastic construction - its quite sturdy but does not evoke high confidence in its ability to tolerate abuse, but I'm sure you don't plan on abusing your expensive camera anyway. For typical applications, it should be more than fine.

The microphone head can be attached directly to the hot shoe of your camera or it can remain attached to the mini "boom" which gives it about 6 inches of extra reach and better isolates it from the body of the camera.

In either configuration, the head itself is of floating design, isolating it from direct, hard contact from the camera body, minimizing vibrations from the zoom or focus mechanics. This seems to work quite well.

I experimented with outside filming using combinations of the two settings on the microphone: Sensitivity High/Low and Frequency Filtering: Flat/Low

A Canon 6D was used for the experiments.

I waited until a good day when the winds were brisk, but of course as soon as I wanted to test the low pass filter, the breeze died down to a light rustle. I did not notice big difference between the two filter modes, but again, Mother Nature wasn't really cooperating. It also comes with a furry "dead kitten" screen to put over the microphone for windy conditions. This is a good bonus that it comes with the kit and fits nicely. I tend to keep it on all the time as it causes no muffling of normal recording.

I definitely found the sensitivity to work better at "high" when shooting outdoors with the subject about 8 feet way, and it did not introduce any significant background noise.

The omnidirectional mics on my Canon 70D are compressed and noisy. I wanted better sound, but wished to avoid outboard audio for casual shoots. The Tascam TM-2X stereo mic seemed like the easiest route to better audio. For serious recordings, I use a Tascam DR-100 MKII with a pair of Neumann KM184. And, nope, the TM-2X doesn't touch the accuracy, low noise and sensitivity of that combo. However, it’s a noticeable upgrade over the builtin mics of my 70D. The TM-2X sounds similar to the build-in mics on the DR-100 MKII: decent stereo imaging but on the bright and thin side. Add a touch of EQ in the mids in post production and they sound surprisingly full. The main gotcha is mic output is weak, requiring lots of preamp gain.

The TM-2X is cleaner than the 70D's built-in mics but quiet tracks still require use of a noise reduction plugin in post. A bounce with the SoundSoap plug-in nixs the egg fry with little overall signal degradation. For kicks I tested the TM-2X on my DR-60D MKII and they were much quieter so the static on my videos are the result of the camera's funky preamps.

These mics have a cardioid pattern so they "hear" in a 180 degree sound field in front of them with reduced backwards sensitivity. When I record guitar ensembles with players on the extreme right and left of the mics, they sound just as vivid as the center players. And I can hear the position of each player in the stereo field with pinpoint accuracy. So a decent mic for recording music ensembles and ambient sounds. On the other hand, this is the wrong mic for interviews on the street or zeroing in on a single voice. The background sounds will overwhelm the subject.

I use the TM-2X in the hot-shoe of a tripod mounted 70D and haven't noticed any handling noise, even when panning.
