I helped a buddy with his networking needs and bought this off the line since it was the first in its class. Does very well until a factory installed HDD failed. Opened it up to replace and found a large build up of moisture between an interior plastic liner. Tech support says the drives were still protected, but its a concern. higher-ups were contacted from tech support and I'll post updates as they come in. Swapped it out with a larger HDD and so far its back to normal operations. Cheers!

The ioSafe 214 is better than I thought it would be. I ordered two 6tb internal drives separately. I inserted the drives and withing 30 minutes I started backing up critical files. Setup and configuration was exceptionally simple. I was presented with a Package Center that comes with the following stations: Download, Audio, Photo, Video, and Cloud. I immediately populated and used each station without issue. The control panel is well organized and to be frank one of the best control panels I have seen. It is divided into File Sharing, Connectivity, System, and Applications. Under File Sharing I was able to connect the ioSafe to my Windows Active Directory Domain. Adding users and groups is also a cinch with easy-to-follow permission settings. Encrypting contents was easy as well; with the appropriate dialog to save a key for your encrypted files. I highly recommend this device.

Superb fail safe solution for home NAS. See bottom of this review for actual product review/comments.

As a long time Synology user (5 years now), the one thing missing has been physical disaster protection. Several times I pondered simply attaching a ioSafe Solo product to the USB port on my Synology NAS... but it seemed to be over-kill at the time for what I needed, so I simply set up a manual process for weekly backup of the NAS and stored the backup in my home safe. The ioSafe 214 solves this ongoing challenge very nicely and elegantly.

Granted, the chance of fire or flood is pretty low for any given home, but it still can happen and when it does, it can wipe out every electronic device in the home. I used to protect against this by doing an NAS archive to a portable hard drive each week and locking it in my home safe which is fire and water proof. While that was a reasonable solution given the options available, it meant manual intervention every week on my part. And frankly, the human element is always the weak point in things like data protection.

So my compliments and appreciation to ioSafe and their partnership with Synology. It gives me the physical disaster protection while allowing me to continue to use Synology technology (which IMO, is the best of the best for home and small office needs on the market today).

You really need three backup locations to be sure you are safe, and one of them needs to be physical disaster proof. In my new setup, using the DS214, I have the original copies of files on my various computers at home, my main backup is to the DS214 using Data Replicator, and I have a redundant copy of the DS214 image on a WD Elements external hard drive.

Works great. Small and easy to setup. A lot of features, we only really use it for a backup server to our backup server. One those O snap boxes. I love the web interface for use and i know it small feature but i enjoyed how i could change the background of the interface. Once i learnt how to backup, it was quite simple. The company of ioSafe, has great support, and offered to help out with any i needed. The seller forgot to send me the hard drives trays, but once i contacted the manufacture they sent me some trays with haste. Also if you haven't done so, i recommend that you check out the fire test videos of this product. It is amazing what it can stand.

The ioSafe 214 is an excellent NAS with Fire and Flood protection. I used 2 WD Red 4TB NAS Drives. It installed easily and I was copying files within a few hours. The ioSafe is built really solid and runs really cool and quiet, although I have it in a closet. I have Gigabit ethernet, but some computers are only 100baseTX. I have two Mac Book Pro Notebooks that now have all the user files from Documents, Movies, Music and Pictures including iTunes and iPhoto moved to the NAS. I can run iTunes or iPhoto from either Mac Book Pro from the NAS and easily access all the Documents, Movies and Photos from either MacBook Pro, Windows Desktop, iPad or iPhone. I now backup both MacBook Pros with Time Machine to the NAS for recovering the Computers and Applications and I offsite backup the Documents and Pictures from the NAS via a MacBook Pro to ZipCloud with their Network Drive option. I have moved every thing the same way for my wife's iMac and she is migrating to a Mac Mini in a couple of days. That's a lot in 4 days, so I may still find some wrinkles. We haven't done any heavy work yet, so we expect a few performance issues. In some cases I may have to move files back to the computer's local drive and then back them up to the NAS for offsite backup. I still plan on implementing Internet Access and other features and Packages.

Update 03/11/2015 - I ended up not getting Mac's iPhoto to work with iTunes and iPhoto fully stored on the NAS. iTunes worked fine with all the files located on the NAS and iPhoto worked fine with all the files located on the NAS. When I ran iTunes it brings up iPhoto. When I tried to select Photos for my iPhone it hung. When I tried to sync it always hung. I ended up with iTunes and iPhoto on the Mac Book Pro's local drives.
