The PL-880 is the third shortwave receiver I have bought. First I had the PL-600, which got me into the hobby in a big way, but once I wanted to start really hunting distant signals I picked up a Grundig 750 (actually a Tecsun radio too, everyone) because I don't have a few grand spare to buy something from Icom. Next I went searching for something that would work for DXing, but also be very portable. I chose this over the Sangean 909x after a long back and forth. Here was my calculus: the 880 has reported firmware issues (which are fixable and have been/are being fixed) whereas the Sangean 909x has reported sensitivity issues, which without putting your radio under the knife yourself, cannot be remedied even with great antenna work (portables, all portables, tend to overload when attached to a serious outdoor or active antenna). Sensitivity issues of any kind are a no-go for a DXer, so I got the Tecsun. Man has it blown my expectations out of the water. Here is the blow by blow:

Build and aesthetics: solid, solid, solid. I will be moving to China soon and bringing this. I am more worried about breaking my own leg than anything happening to this thing. It includes a nice feaux leather (animal lovers thank you, Tecsun) carrying case that is perfect for travel. The knobs, and I must admit, I am a sucker for turning knobs, are smooth and tuning with them is dead on accurate. They are not overly sensitive like on that on the Grundig 750, so no worries about sneezing and loosing your signal. The radio feels well built, the buttons are responsive and touch firmly. Display is standard. It does not display a ton of information, but I do like having a numeric value for the signal strength and S/N ratio. Helps for reception reporting. Finally, this radio just looks classy.

There are many things to like about this radio. It appears to be of high quality construction, the tuning knobs have a good feel to them and operate smoothly, and it has a sound bigger than the relatively small size of the speaker would suggest. There are some problems with it, however, mainly related to SSB and weak signal reception. I would urge prospective buyers to research the radio in the Yahoo Groups for the PL-880. It was brought out in the group that there appear to be multiple firmware revisions available, and that batch 8820 is the most recent. Earlier versions had even more problems than the 8820, so do yourself a favor and check.

The radio does have sync detection available by pressing and holding either one of the SSB keys. However, sync does not hold well at all, and it also adds considerable distortion. There are multiple filter options available, but SSB is limited to 4 KHz, even when sync detection is activated, which limits the fidelity of the radio. There are also other problems with the current firmware which cause the bandwidth to change when you try to tune a SSB signal, and also cause the audio to jump around when trying to listen to a weak signal. The front end overloads easily with an outdoor antenna, even when the signal is attenuated by using the 3 position switch to cut down the antenna gain.

If all you are looking for is a good looking radio with a great sound for AM and FM only, I would recommend it. If you will be listening to more Shortwave, Longwave, or SSB, and want a functional sync detector with a reasonable bandwidth for good fidelity, then I would hold off until the design matures more. Also beware firmware revisions 8819 and below at this time. These should be "B" stock and not sold as new.

I have compared this Tucsun PL880 radio to my Panasonic RF-B45 radio. Both radio are compatible in term of size, functionality and price, except that I purchased the Panasonic radio twenty years ago.

On FM, the PL880 is superior in every respects--better sensitivity, selectivity and audio quality (it is not just because the speaker is better, the signal is simply cleaner and clearer). I would give the PL880 five stars and the RF-B45 three and a half stars.
On AM, the Panasonic is slightly more sensitive than the Tecsun in receive weak signals, but the Tecsun is better in term of selectivity and audio quality. I will give the Panasonic four and a half stars and the Tecsun four stars.
On shortwave bands, just like in FM, the Tecsun PL880 beats the Panasonic in every aspects. I will give the Tecsun four and a half stars and the Panasonic four stars.
On SSB, The Tecsun's implantation is much more sophisticated and effective than the RF-B45. I will give the PL880 a five star to RF-B45 three star rating. Overall, I would give the Tecsun PL880 a rating of four and a half out of five stars.
The Tecsun PL880 offers more than just improved sensitivity and selectivity. It has more controls and convenient features. Its audio quality is one of the best among portable radio in my opining. It appears weighing 20% less than the RF-B45, partly because it using a single lithium cell instead of the four AA batteries. The included charger is also serve as a external power source, which does not generate background noise. After a few days of using the new radio, I can appreciate the technology advancement over the past twenty years. It is a worthy upgrade for me.
