Edit: I am writing this edit approx 7 months after my original review. While I am not changing my opinion of the speaker in any way whatsoever, I do think that at the price it is currently listed at ($170) it is a bit more realistic, but still to expensive. If I were to put a price on this speaker, on the high end I would say $150 max, but realistically probably closer to $125. Speakers like the Motorola Deck Ultra, and the JBL Charge offer more power and sometimes even more features for $150 and I personally believe that price is the market value for speakers of this size. Just remember when you purchase that you are paying for portability, not sound quality, And at this point, $200 is inflated and it seems that Beats is the only company that hasn't really caught on to this yet.

I work at radio shack which gives me a unique opportunity to test out a fairly large assortment of electronics, and being that Bluetooth speakers are my favorite that I carry, I hope I can help shed some light on this. I gatta say, the for a speaker of this price, I'm not impressed, and I wouldn't recommend it, however I will go a bit more in depth with everything.

Bluetooth: Bluetooth works fine. When you first turn it on it automatically starts looking for a device. Most speakers do this so nothing special. The range is good enough, and gets the job done.

Sound quality: to me, this is where I am disappointed. Bass is in everything.Read more ›

I asked for this for Christmas, and after getting exactly what I asked for I am sad to say I am really disappointed and will be returning mine. I wanted a small speaker system as I have really enjoyed the last system I bought about three years ago. Took it everywhere, always nice to have portable music whether it be tailgating, sitting in a hotel room, or out in your backyard and just want convenience.

I went with the Beats Pill because I knew Dre's line was somewhat known for quality bass in small speakers. With the Pill Box being the newest, latest in the the line of Beats small speakers, I figured it was going to be well worth the $200 price tag.

These speakers are nowhere near as good as the price implies. They can't handle bass at all and pop anytime the music gets above a moderate volume levels. Far from the "Beats" brand Dre has built up as far as having superior bass, these have no bass at all!

I can't believe anyone citing superior music sound quality in a small speaker as their primary buying objective being happy with the Pill Box. Maybe the bluetooth, speakerphone, etc. are OK but they were not the main reasons I bought the Pill Box. Was anticipating so much more Dre!

I am a fan of the Beats by Dre brand in general and I have had my Beats headphones for 3 years now and they are still going strong. However, these speakers are a terrible brand extension for Beats.
PROS:
-The size is really nice. It is really easy to hold in your hand and easily packs into a backpack.
-The physical volume buttons are great. A lot of cheaper bluetooth speakers rely on the device synced with the speakers for volume control. This can sometimes lead to software malfunctions, but you dont have to worry about that with the Pill.
-The color choice is excellent.
-The beats button on the front is really convenient for play/pause and pairing new devices.

CONS:
-PRICE!!!! There is nothing about this device that establishes it as a premium bluetooth speaker that compares with the likes of the Bose Soundlink. It is the same price as the Bose set and it has far inferior sound quality, lower volume, and less features. This speaker should cost $100, not $200.
-The sound quality is lacking by a mile. I got the Pill and the $65 iHome speaker for Christmas and I cant tell a difference in bass quality or volume. The bass and volume is exactly the same quality. The overall tone and feel is better than the iHome, but not even comparable to the Soundlink Mini.
-Every time you unplug the Pill from the charger, the music stops. I've also had connectivity issues with my computer. When I play Pandora and skip a song, Pandora will just keep skipping songs and it has to be restarted. Ive tried this on my iPhone and the same issue happened with Pandora and Spotify.
-While the Pill has more speakers and a better design, I would take the iHome over the Beats any day because of how rugged they are.Read more ›

The Beats Pill is a fantastic piece of electronic that not only looks sleek but also emits decent sounding tunes via Bluetooth. I bought it to replace our aging Altec Lansing inMotion IM310 Portable Speakers which served us well since 2009. It is true that the bass level for the Pill is relatively weak compared to a Jambox, heck it sounds weaker than our retired Altec Lansing inMotion, however the bass level is sufficient for everyday use. While it doesn’t pack the juice to rock an outdoor pool party, it is perfectly suitable for a private pool or patio party and indoor use. We use our Pill mounted on a Pill Dude dock in our condo and take it with us on road trips. Nothing like having a speaker system that occupies minimal space, looks great and beating music in the background while we grill, pound beer or sip wine during a road trip.
