The only external HD I have found which will work in warmer temperatures. WD and Seagate will eventually fail.I now have 4 of these as I replace each of my less expensive external HD's. If you connect to USB 3 port, it will be nearly as fast as an internal Drive.

4TG works great for an external hard drive on my DirecTV Genie DVR. The internal drive is 1TG, but it is disabled when you plug in the G-Drive HD. It comes with the eSATA cable you need. Connect the eSATAa cable for the HD first into your Genie, then turn on the external HD power. Wait about 1 minute, then plug in the power for the Genie. It will only take a couple minutes for the Genie to automatically format the external HD. Note: be sure you use this sequence. Programs on the internal 1TB HD are not accessible.

I've been using this drive for almost two years now. It's connected to my PC via eSATA. The speed is comparable to the internal drives, not the SSD's of course and I didn't expect that. I liked it so much in fact that I bought two more. I've got my machine backed up on them, use them for mass storage. I even installed an image of Windows 7 on one of them, from before I upgraded to Windows 8. I can boot to Windows 7, played around with Linux Mint. The drive is extremely reliable and quiet. I don't know why another post said it's noisy because it is not.

If you want massive amounts of storage, along with speed and reliability this is the drive for you. I've tried using USB 3.0 connection, it works and is pretty fast if you compare it to another USB drive. But go with eSATA if you want the fastest transfers possible. I added a card on my PC so I could get two more ports for eSATA.

Super good / fast external drive. I got one that was a dud but the supplier replaced it immediately and the new one's been working like a charm for many months now.

After a year of use it spontaneously lost everything and said I could not use the drive without reformatting it. Total bummer. I now consider this drive to be completely unreliable.

I've had nothing, but frustration since I received this G-Tech drive several weeks ago to use with my IMac. It worked for about a day and then started reporting an error message and failure to back-up. Spent an extensive amount of time researching the issue. Used the Disk Utility to verify and repair the G-Tech drive and my hard drive, but no change. Followed some online advice to do a complete reset of Time Machine by deleting the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file and that worked for a day or two and then the error was back. Time Machine will only back up to the G-Tech external hard drive if the computer is restarted and who wants to have to remember to do that every day. Read some other reviews of other G-Tech drives that recommend using the USB 3.0 connection instead of the FireWire. Planning to try that next to see if it will solve the problem, but unless you want headaches, I'd buy another product if you're planning to use this with a Mac and Time Machine.

Works perfectly with Time Machine for both my Macs. I just hooked them up with the supplied Firewire cable, selected the G-drive as my Time Machine disk and backed up my data. My laptop is running Yosemite (10.10.5) and my iMac was running 10.9 (since updated to 10.10). I turn on the hard drive when I turn on my IMac and it runs a backup. I connect my laptop to it every so often to back it up. I have had no problems what so ever using this with Time Machine. Both my Macs are a couple of years old.

This media drive is really all you need for your editing or media storage. This comes with the high data transfer ports, looks great, is stack able and you can daisy chain a number of them together for a raid. The case is very high quality with a heat sink on the bottom but I have not had any problems with overheating. Overall a great product. If you are a professional editor and need an inexpensive high quality expandable drive system, this is a good start.
