Original review: 1 star.

This is written in the event someone is looking for answers to this problem - there is not much information about it elsewhere.

This upgrade has a serious conflict with the audio device in Apple Thunderbolt displays. Those using such displays with laptops or Mac minis will experience this issue. The display has a monophonic microphone input (the computer's Built-in Microphone has 2 inputs) and Finale won't load it's audio engine when started due to the conflict with the Display Audio having a single input. When the Thunderbolt display is disconnected Finale loads properly. With the display connected, an error message pops up stating "The audio engine failed to load. Please restart Finale."

Neither the 2014a nor the "vanilla" version's audio features work in this set up. So if you use a Thunderbolt display, particularly necessary for large scores, you will not be able to use the program's audio capabilities. The solution, from Finale tech support, is to _not_ use the external display (unacceptable), use another computer, or use a the previous version (2012) until an update is released. This has a significant impact on professional projects and teaching at our university where we have to have the same software versions in the media labs as in our personal computers.

Here's the communication from Finale tech support:
"As dicussed [sic], Finale 2014a's audio engine is conflicting with an audio device, specifically with the input for "Display Audio". Finale 2014 "vanilla" did not have the same issue (though had it's own set of issues with some other audio devices) and therefore it may be the best option to roll back to that version. [...

When MakeMusic's Finale software comes to mind, I get that fetid feeling in my stomach that is likened to the caste of thoughts including the Internal Revenue Service, Comcast's Customer Support, and distant family reunions. The most charitable adjective I can, in good conscience, use to describe Finale is "necessary". And, at its best, that's what Finale is. Composing and arranging music is intended to be arrestingly thrilling - a joyous activity. Finale does to that past time what your dog desires to do in your flower bed once every afternoon. Every new update consciouslessly desecrates music by disgracing our professional field with its unrelenting ability to retain every bug, glitch, and shortcoming as the preceding edition. All while being offensively overpriced and guilefully obsolete with your next OS update. Only Finale compensates your four to six hundred dollars with same technical blunders you experienced half a decade prior. Astonishing is it that, forty five years after computers more primitive than most graphing calculators exactingly landed man on the moon, we cannot design a program that notates music. This software is a stain on my hard drive. A blemish on my desktop. And yet, there seems to be no superior product. To recommend that we, as professionals, stop using Finale would be to undermine the music trade itself by removing the staple Finale has become. We've arrived at an impasse until a better option comes along. Until then, I'll continue to use Finale. But I'll do so with the same demeanor with which I continue to pay the IRS, remain on hold with Comcast, and eat my butternut squash casserole at the next family reunion.

Finale 2014 totally broke movie playback making it essentially useless for any form of film scoring. About 2% (no joke) of existing movies playback. Earlier versions of Finale play them fine. I've used Finale since 1995 and cannot go any further until they fix this. If not fixed in the nested version, I will drop the use of the program and find another app. Eve since MakeMusic was bought by the LEAP Equity firm it has gone downhill. The general consensus both online and by pros in Los Angeles who have used it for years is that it is going to die (and fast) if it is not fixed. The company refuses to acknowledge the defects. A once great program now totally sucks!

I work as a professional engraver, and MakeMusic has never fully addressed the issues relating to my base. I, and many others, did not upgrade to 2014 from 2012 because of all of the bugs and lack of improvements in the 2014 version. I recently had to upgrade to the newest Mac OS, Yosemite, and 2012 continually crashes and will NOT be supported by MakeMusic. I have been a staunch supporter of Finale for many years, but my support has now wavered. I am eagerly awaiting the release of Steinberg's new notation software which is currently in development.

I used this program as a composer for years. From the beginning I hated every aspect of it. There is no doubt that you can write music much faster by hand unless you have lots of cut and paste repetition. As fate would have it, by the time I bought Finale I also had 7,000 hours of computer application programming under my belt. Based on that experience, I conjecture that the initial architectural concept of this product was deeply and horribly flawed, resulting in an unfixable mess. Finale would basically have to start from scratch to improve functionality.

Within two days of finally switching to Sibelius I was kicking myself for suffering like an idiot for so very, very long.
