I received Hot Dots Let's Master Grade 2 Reading free for review. All opinions are my own.

Hot Dots Let's Master Grade 2 Reading includes an interactive talking Hot Dots Pen and two Hot Dots workbooks. The workbooks include questions, and multiple choice answers with a black dot next to each possible response. Your child will use the Hot Dots pen to select an answer by vertically pressing down on one of the dots. If the answer is correct a positive reinforcement will be heard and the pen will light up green. If the answer is wrong, a try again message will sound and the pen will light up red. The Grade Reading books cover topics such as reading comprehension, synonyms, antonyms, homophones, multiple word meanings, context clues, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

The Grade 2 reading books are great because they move away from teaching reading in general to more of the contextual communication skills of reading comprehension and grammar rules for reading and writing. There are some multiple paragraph passages in the workbook the child will be expected to read, if they struggle an adult can always be there to help, however the words are fairly easy and it should be easily managed by a proficient 7 year old reader. As a homeschooler, I notice that many of these questions are formed in the style I remember from when I was younger taking standardized tests. This is a plus to me because it gives the kids experience answering questions in this format to help them out if they are ever in a situation where they will need to take these tests.

Overall this is a great supplemental kit for teaching 2nd grade age kids reading. The pages are durable and made to last through repeated use. These books can be used as a teaching tool and as a review for previous concepts to reinforce those ideas as needed. I recommend this kit to anyone with a 2nd grade aged child. It's a tool for teaching reading comprehension and grammar for them.

I received the Hot Dots Let’s Master Grade 2 Reading from Educational Insights for my first grade son. This set comes in a nice box with a handle for easy transport and storage. Inside are two fifty-page, spiral-bound, laminated books of reading and language arts questions and the Hot Dots pen. Each page contains two questions. There are 85 pages of regular questions and 15 pages of more advanced questions. Topics covered are reading comprehension, synonyms & antonyms, homophones & multiple-meaning words, context clues, spelling, and punctuation & grammar. Two AAA batteries required for the pen are not included. The pen is interchangeable and can be used with various grade levels and topics of Hot Dots books.

Children read the multiple choice questions and use the pen to choose their answer. If the answer is correct, it lights up green and makes positive sounds, if it is wrong, it lights up red and makes negative sounds. One button on the pen is used to select the type of sounds. You can choose speech, sound effects, or a combination of both. The second button on the pen changes the volume level to low, high, or mute.

My son really liked the concept of Hot Dots. However, he found most of the questions to be too easy. He said that they already covered these topics in first grade, and felt it shouldn’t be rated for the second-grade level. Then, I showed him the more challenging questions at the end of book 2. He said that these were generally more difficult, but also answered most of them easily. A problem he had with the pen was that if you don’t hold it straight up and down and put it in the center of the dot, it sometimes told him he answered the question wrong, even though he answered correctly. **I was sent a copy for free in exchange for my honest review.

The Hot Dots Let's Master Grade 2 Reading set is fun for my kids to play with. In this set, you receive two spiral bound books and a Hot Dots pen. The Hot Dots pen allows the child to instantly know if the answer he chose is correct. If you are correct, the pen will light up green and say a congratulatory phrase. If you are wrong, it will light up red and say that you were wrong. There is a volume control on the pen, and it even allows you to turn the sound off. With the sound off, this makes a great quiet activity.
The books are 50 pages each. The pages are durable. Included in the books are the following skills: punctuation, capital letters, reading comprehension, plurals, spelling, contractions, prefixes, suffixes, context clues, synonyms, antonyms, and homophones. The second book also included multiple meaning words and a number of challenge problems. I love that the skills are mixed up in the books and they are all color coded so if you want to focus on just one skill it is easy to find.
Overall, I think this is a great set. My daughter is in first grade, and though some of it is a little too hard for her right now, she still enjoys it and will be able to use it for some time.

I received this item free for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

I have two children ages 7 and 9. They were immediately intrigued by this item. They love the interactive pen and the immediate feedback it gives. The kit comes with 2 spiral bound books with 85 lessons and 15 advanced lessons plus the interactive talking pen. The skills covered include reading comprehension, synonyms and antonyms, homophones and multiple meaning words, context clues, spelling, and punctuation and grammar. The skills are a good stretch for my 1st grader and a great review for my 3rd grader. I have left it sit out and a number of times the kids will pick it up on their own and play with it for a few minutes. I look forward to using it this summer as we continue to review skills. It keeps the interest of children in a wide age range (we had a friends 2nd grade daughter over and she played with this over an hour).
