My Special Ed. Reading students are loving the Hot Dots Jr. sets! We have the Pre-K Reading through grade 3.
I love that I am able to use these on varying levels with students to differentiate with kids and individualize their "station" time. As a middle school teacher I was worried that the kids would feel the Pre-K pen was too ‘babyish’ but it was the most sought after pen.
I told the kids that I was using this to see if my nieces and nephews would like to they would not feel embarrassed by the grade levels on the books or box. THEY ASKED TO USE THEM AGAIN. My other concern was that they would not take this seriously or learn and that kids would just click away and not get a 'take away' from it. This was no issue. They started to play, yes, but then, when they started having success, they took it seriously. One student asked to borrow it and take it home to show mom and dad. Unfortunately that isn't possible with my demographic of students, but he does like to spend his lunch with me working on the books and I love that they ......ARE SECRETLY LEARNING. SHHHH The kids had great insight. These are what they said....

Pros: The activities are on target in this one for each level that they were reading. . They love the puppy pen and said that even they enjoyed using the animal pen. They do like that they can tell if are right or wrong, For catching up on kids that hare really having a hard time with Phonics and Phonemic Awareness.....I highly recommend this.

Cons: For a teacher......the price seems a little bit high, since I know that I will need more than one or two of these for a class. The ONLY thing the students had to say was that it would be better if there was a mute button or a way to hook up headphones into the pens so it won't disturb others and bring attention to themselves. I have to agree, the noise was a bit much after awhile so they held the pens volume down when they used them to keep them quiet

I received Hot Dots Let's Master Grade 3 Reading free for review. All opinions are my own.

Hot Dots Let's Master Grade 3 Reading includes an interactive talking Hot Dots Pen and two Hot Dots workbooks. The workbooks include questions, and multiple choice answers with a black dot next to each possible response. Your child will use the Hot Dots pen to select an answer by vertically pressing down on one of the dots. If the answer is correct a positive reinforcement will be heard and the pen will light up green. If the answer is wrong, a try again message will sound and the pen will light up red. The Grade 3 Reading books cover topics such as reading comprehension, synonyms, antonyms, homophones, context clues, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

The 3rd Grade Reading books are similar to the 2nd grade reading books, containing reading comprehension passages and questions that are just a step more difficult. These are harder to read, but still appropriate for 3rd graders. There are some pictures available to help the kids form context of the words they are reading, but for the most part they are required to understand what they are reading to progress through the books. I love that there is a great mix of language arts concepts in each book including grammar and vocabulary.

Overall this is a great supplemental kit for teaching 3rd grade age kids language arts. The pages are durable and made to last through repeated use. These books can be used as a teaching tool and as a review for previous concepts to reinforce those ideas as needed. I recommend this kit to anyone with a 3rd grade aged child. It's a great educational tool to teach language arts to them.

I use these for a center in my classroom. The students prefer the boxes of cards over the book format. I like the book but the students do not stay as engaged in this format.

Hot Dots Math and Reading

I think these products are a really great way to supplement math and reading lessons in an enjoyable and engaging way. I have two third grade boys who spent about 30 minutes playing with Hot Dots Math and Hot Dots Reading the first time we tried the product. They loved using the “pen” and the comments of encouragement amused them. One kind of raced through the math book to find the problem he considered fun (more challenging). The other just worked through the books page by page, occasionally skipping something he thought was “boring,” because it was something he’d mastered, or too challenging. I think the books reflect the third grade curriculum very well.

The next time we went to use them, they were less interested because they said it felt too much like extra homework. But when I insisted, because I wanted them to get more practice in the areas where they could use some help, they enjoyed the process.

I would recommend these products as learning tools, but I would not present them as “toys” or a “game” to third graders because, at least with mine, they think I’m tricking them into just doing work. When I said we would do 10-15 minutes of Hot Dots for extra practice, they were happy to do it.

Good tool initially for engaging my boys in reading skills. They liked playing with the book initially, but they preferred the hot dots math booklet more. After they finished the book, they did not use it again.
