Overall this is a great alarm clock. Amazing stereo sound through it's two speakers.
Features I like:
- Quality and build of product
- Amazing sound quality. Great audio separation with the two speakers. Decent+ base quality (had to adjust a bit using the equalizer to work best for my taste).
- USB Charger for media devices
- Bluetooth audio synch-up was really easy to setup
- Software, I use iPhone/iPad version
* Nice approach for setting alarms and controlling sound volume
* Decent equalizer feature. Not super robust but awesome that it exists.
* Ability to adjust sound volume when listening to the radio from a distance (when streaming over bluetooth I just use the iPhone's volume control - but be careful 'cause when you switch back to radio it might be loud)
- Light dimming is perfect. I was really nervous there'd be lots of little lights lit up at night. The auto dim feature works great and all the lights, aside from the clock display, are out when the power is off. So, even if you use the sleep setting the lights are dim enough so that you're not annoyed.
- Radio quality is perfect. I have to stay this device is probably going to have me listing to the radio a lot more because the quality is so good.

Missing & Disliked Features:
- They've got ever other modern technology in this thing, why didn't they just add Radio Controlled Clock feature to synch up with real time. Granted there's a feature where you're bluetooth device (such as my iPhone) becomes the clock control. But it really would have been nice to have RCC
- The volume control is the middle control. I'll have to get used to this. I find I'm fumbling to find the middle control and end up accidentally turning one of the other knobs.Read more ›

"How much are they asking for this?" they ask, even, especially, after I tell them. "It's an alarm clock? Why so expensive?"

Then I take it through its paces for them. It starts to make sense.

For most of my life I've dealt with the sub-twenty priced alarm clocks. Most recently, I got "fancier" with Sony ICF-C318 Clock Radio with Dual Alarm (Black) (Discontinued by Manufacturer), which I liked as it was easy to use, and had a wonderful knob on the side that allowed me to adjust the alarm very quickly, however much up or down, so that I could be more precise if I wanted an extra or earlier 10 minutes or more. For a while, I was using a NatureBright Inspiration Deluxe LED Desk Lamp, which had an alarm like feature with sound and gradually increasing light that mimicked sunrise. Better claim than result, but it cost me a little more than this Yamaha. A little while back, I got a Onkyo CS-355 CD Hi-Fi Mini System with Bluetooth for our bedroom, but it didn't have an alarm feature and a few months ago got moved to our daughter's room. Why mention all these? Because these are what come to mind when I think of this Yamaha, in some ways it exceeds aspects of each of these and performs similar function.

First of all, the sound quality is equivalent to the Onkyo. In fact, I feel like the Yamaha has a deeper bass. There's no CD player or USB input, so the Onkyo has some additional features as a mini-unit.Read more ›

First, I use this as a radio / bluetooth streamer, not as an alarm clock...some of the other reviews touched on many of those features. The look of this product, the remarkable sound quality considering its small footprint, ..... justifies its price. It appears many companies are going after the Bose concept, small footprint, very high sound quality devices. Yamaha is a tough competitor in any market they enter, and NO exception here. I marvel how they get such good sound quality out of such a small box. Now, lets not get carried away.... the size of this box limits the overall volume the system can produce....this is true of all speakers..so don't expect super high quality sound at boom box volume levels, that would be an unrealistic expectation... at relatively close distances, say 15-25 ft. at normal volumes, both music and voice sound quality is superb. highly recommended....

I heard this radio in a Montreal hotel and loved the sound. Subsequently we sought a portable radio -- battery operated -- which would give this pleasure at home, here and there in the house. We purchased a Tivoli Music System 3, but the sound was unsatisfying. Returned that for the Yamaha, and were again delighted with the sound quality; thus, I strongly recommend this Yamaha over the Tivoli for sound quality.

Since the Yamaha is not intrinsically battery operated, I took advantage of the fact that its power supply is separate ('wall wart'). Any battery system that can deliver 15 V will work. It draws ~250 mA at a moderate volume, so e.g., 3 hours of autonomy requires 750 mAh. I found that Li Ion batteries in the 'AA' format are available; four deliver just 15V nominally in a compact package. The plug is EIAJ-05 -- RadioShack carries it but not many other sources do! 6mm exterior (bump of 6.5mm on tip), 1.4mm center pin. Do note that the system draws current even when off (to run the clock I guess...), so unplugging the battery (or a switch on the battery pack...same source) when not in use is advised. Clock then loses time...but now we have a portable radio with superb sound.

We were reminded again how disappointing Bluetooth is for careful music listening. We use a cable.
