EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
As of February 2015, I wholeheartedly believe that this is the best laptop under $600. It is future proof, upgradeable, has a solid build quality, and great connectivity.

QUICK NOTES:
The laptop I received did not have the superfish malware installed.

I have not seen vendors mention that this model has bluetooth, an expresscard/34 slot, or an empty M.2 slot (for WWAN/SSD).

Trackpad- I saw a lot of reviews hating on the trackpad, and planned on using a mouse with this computer. Long story short, its by far the best trackpad I've ever used, but if I didn't look up how to use it I would be very frustrated with it.

CONS:

GPU not suitable for serious gaming (not a concern of mine)

PROS:

Upgradable- The CPU is NOT SOLDERED to the motherboard. It can be replaced with quad-core i7 parts with several times the performance of the i5-4200m. The RAM can be upgraded to 16gb. It should be possible to add a backlit-keyboard or FHD display, though I have not looked into this.

Ports- In addition to the 2 usb 3.0 ports, this laptop has an expresscard 34 slot, an unused M.2 slot (with WWAN antennae pre-wired), and a multimedia card reader. The cd/dvd tray can be replaced with a SATA tray for storage devices. The MDP interface can be converted to HDMI. Really the only ports you will be unable to emulate going forward are USB 3.1 and thunderbolt.

Screen- I was initially shocked by the appearance of the screen in windows 7. I tried to raise the resolution, only to find it at the maximum. Turns out the icons were upscaled by default. The screen looks great and gets very bright when needed. I'm not a huge monitor geek but it appears to have good viewing angles and color gamut.

I ordered this laptop from Lenovo custom-order and installed GNU/Linux on it. If you decide to do the same be sure to get an Intel wireless NIC (7260), and not the ThinkPad branded one (which ends up being a RealTek card 8192ee that has poor driver support in the kernel). Other than that Linux runs very well on this machine.

Pros:
+ Nice high-resolution screen with decent viewing angle
+ Comfortable keyboard that includes a numeric pad (offset touchpad is not a problem)
+ Good battery life (this may vary depending on how you configure it though)
+ Good port selection and includes a cd-burner (they fixed the problem from the T440s where the tray pops open a lot from accidentally pressing the latch)
+ Easy access to internals, for a laptop, with instructions online on how to open it and change components
+ Solid construction, good weight, doesn't get too hot during use

Cons:
- Trackpad is not very precise. If you need a lot of accurate mousing (graphics, games) you'll need an external mouse
- No indicator light for caps-lock key
- Software lockout for upgrading components - if you decide to change the internals be sure to use Lenovo whitelisted components or computer will refuse to boot and instead yield an error - it won't even let you access the BIOS/UEFI.
- Fan noise, while not very loud can come on quite a bit if you're taxing the machine.

Lenovo changed the design on the 540p and removed the Thinklight and changed the TrackPad to a very clunky setup. The backlit keyboard and finger print reader are now options not included on every model. I have been using ThinkPads for over 20 years and I am very disappointed in this model. Also the power connector is now square and is no longer interchangeable with standard ThinkPad power adaptors.

Bought a T540p at a huge discount direct from Lenovo on Cyber Monday last month. Received it a week or two later and discovered why it was it was priced so low (about the same as a Edge E540). It is no longer a 'real' Thinkpad (like previous T-series) but is more like a souped up Edge now. It does have more horsepower under the hood than my current Edge 14 or my son's Edge E430 (both Core i3s) and the T540p case seems stronger (the deck doesn't flex like a E540 but I can't say the same for the lid). Otherwise the T540p is very Edge like. No indicator lights except that lame red dot over the 'i' in Thinkpad on the case and lid as in the Edge. And the T540i doesn't have the green light by the power plug like the Edges do. Instead it has a new square power connector on the back. Not compatible with previous Thinkpad round power connectors (which means the universal travel PS that I have used for years wouldn't work now). Same reversed function keys as in the Edge (but I am used to this setup now). Same 'chiclet' keyboard (which I like). Since the T540p includes a numeric keypad the keyboard and touchpad are offset to the left just like a 15" Edge. The T540p case may be some sort of composite but it looks and feels as cheap as an Edge. The lid does have some sort of soft coating but it smudges - I rather have a hard surface like my Edge 14. Unfortunately in one key area it isn't even as good as my Edges - the touchpad is just awful. Right and lift 'clicks' are a hit or miss proposition. Now my Edges have the classic Thinkpad track point (the red 'eraser' in the middle of the keyboard) with dedicated click and scroller buttons plus real right and left click buttons below the touchpad. The T540p has neither - everything is integrated into the touchpad.Read more ›
