If you have the budget and want a one-layer jacket that keeps you warm no matter what, I don't recommend this one. If you are a person who is "always cold" - I recommend it for milder temps, but not really cold temps.

First, I must explain that I'm a New England native living in Virginia, and do not consider Virginia winters to be "cold" by any means. I've worn the North Face Thermoball jacket for about a year now, daily, in the winter, spring, late fall & winter again. This is my first North Face purchase and probably my last. When I first bought it in January 2014, I loved it. It is very lightweight, nicely fitted, and was warm at the time (the temps were mostly in the upper 30s, 40s and sometimes 50s then). It has nice interior pockets that will carry a lot, including much larger cell phones, but the bulk will show through the front.

So here it is December 2014, and it's 29 degrees outside, and I hate this jacket more than life itself. I'm wearing 3 layers, plus this jacket, and I am COLD! I don't like layering and feeling like a kid in a snowsuit. It's been machine washed on the gentle cycle several times and the stitching is starting to unravel, and the fabric on the cuff is pilled. It is not windproof, it is not good in the rain. I recommend this jacket for those who get chilly from temps starting the 60s down to maybe 40 degrees (with layers or whatever you do underneath.)

For this kind of money, I'm going back to my trusty Marmot or L.L. Bean outerwear (a/k/a God's Gift to New England Winters). I hope this review helps you in your decision-making.

I spotted this jacket a sporting goods store. I normally would not think of dropping $200 on a lightweight jacket but had to try it on. It fit well over a sweater without looking bulky and I also tried it on as a jacket liner. All I can say is I had to have it so I put it on my wish list on Amazon. As a pleasant surprise DH bought it for me as an anniversary present. I was thrilled. It is comfortable, it has 2 huge inside pockets as well as two good sized outsized pockets. I wanted it for venues where I never had warm enough coats and had to layer and looked awfully bulky. This is perfect as it is easy to move around in and keeps me warm at the same time.

This was a gift for my teenage daughter. The fit and look is really nice however, it is no thicker than a windbreaker. This jacket is more for a fashion statement than to use to keep warm.

I have a downsweater look-alike with hood from Uniqlo. I use it a lot during winter hike/snowshoe. It's a life saver.

However, it is not good when rain, snow or in heavy mist therefore I want to get a non down version without the hood (I prefer a beanie; hood obstructs my peripheral vision).

This one fits the bill. It's very packable and light weight. The fit is slightly roomy (S for me) therefore I can wear it over a couple of layers. It compresses down when I wear an outer layer over it.

The sleeves and torso are on the longish side; a good thing. I prefer them longer than shorter.

If you see one on sale, grab it. Even if you are not active, this is a good mid level layering piece.

Returning this jacket. It's way too expensive for the price. It's not flattering and there's no way it will survive even a fall season in the Midwest! Too bad because the color is awesome... goes wonderfully with my shoes... Better luck next time...

I am an avid hiker. I used this jacket with a merino wool base layer, fleece insulating layer and this jacket as an outer layer. I felt warm as I was hiking on a snowy day down the Grand Canyon. I got to the campground and removed the jacket. Lo and behold I was soaking wet from the sweat I had generated. Although it kept me warm it has no breathability and being wet is dangerous when you are in freezing temps. It does pack small, is lightweight and fit well, looks good. I'm saving it for use in town and on moderate hikes.

I get cold very easily and this jacket is perfect for temperatures in the 40's and 50's. Maybe not warm enough for colder temperatures. I love the fit and feel of it. It is very light weight and packable.
