Packaging:
This NAS came in one of the most awesome packaging that I have seen. There were a total of three boxes that it was shipped in, the Amazon box and two Synology boxes. I assume it was for better protection. The NAS was half the box's size which gave it plenty of room to be knocked around without damage. So even though the box was damaged in shipping the NAS was safe inside. The parts and material were placed in the middle of the box on top of the NAS in its own cut out area. The NAS itself was neatly gift wrapped in protective clear plastic.

Drive Installation:
I installed (3) 4TB WD RED drives into the NAS. The drives are screwed onto the hard drive caddies which Synology provided more than enough of for both 2.5" and 3.5". The hard drives caddies can be locked in place with the included plastic key. The caddies slide firmly into place with little effort.

Rack Installation: I would of liked the rack ears to have been a little stronger because of how deep the NAS is. I feel than you would not be able to put much pressure on the NAS before it started to bend the ears. But they look great and work just fine for now. It did not come with rack screws which is fine because I have plenty of my own.

Start Up/Setup:
The NAS starts up quick. But for some reason the site Synology has for finding a new NAS on your network did not detect my NAS. Most likely because I put it on a different subnet than the computer I was using. I was able to reach my NAS with the alternate method of using the default host name of the NAS. Setup was a breeze and I was able to setup my drive in a RAID 5 format. This product has probably been on of the easiest to get going.

I also downloaded the beta version 5 of the DSM because it looks amazing and has very little bugs.

I will update this review further as time goes by.

This is my 10th Synology NAS. Very quick and easy to set up. The GUI is intuitive and powerful. Easy to set up email notification to alert you to any issues. A wide selection of software packages available from Synology and 3rd parties to increase productivity and functionality. Easily integrates with Windows domains. A snap to serve a website or FTP site. I went with the RS814+ because I needed the extra CPU power and memory to handle my surveillance system consisting of 4 HD IP cameras. Initially I was using an RS212 but it was running at 100% CPU because of the camera load and it became unusable. The RS814+ now runs at about 10% CPU while handling the 4 cameras, serving a website, an FTP site, several network shares and a photo blog.
One complaint is that the NAS does not come with the rack rails. You have to buy them separately and they are required to mount in a rack mount cabinet. The front mounts are not strong enough to support the unit. I would also probably take off 1/2 a star if I could for support. Their support is not very knowledgeable and can only help with the simple stuff. Their forum is also pretty worthless. I've posted several questions and I have never received a useful response. They don't appear to monitor or contribute much to their forum. Fortunately, the devices are very simple and the average use probably won't need any assistance.

You can't beat the synology OS. You can make it as simple or as complicated as you want it to be.

This is a great mid-level NAS. The inclusion of 4 NICs is greatly helpful for iSCSI so you can bond a few NICs together for better throughput while using one NIC for management. Most NASs only have dual NICs which limit you to 1 NIC for data transfer.

The management software for this device is great! It is all web based but is one of the best "webapps" I have ever used. It is basically a little window manager OS in a browser. Setup was a breeze, just have to find your way through the menus and make sure you choose the right settings. There is some overlap/confusion when setting up a block or file based LUN for iSCSi.

Running 4 RE 2TB drives in a RAID 10 iSCSI block LUN and getting decent throughput. Not pushing mine very hard (DR site) so I have yet to really see how much IOPS I can get out of it. Note: there are some concerns online with slow/low throughput. Google around.

Cheap plastic drive bays, a very cheap quality build, and extremely noisy fans (not for an audio studio, unless you have a machine room). If it weren't for the controller software, which is highly evolved and a delight to use, I would have returned it for something higher quality. Synology really gets the software side of the NAS game, so that's ultimately the most important thing. Sadly, there are weekly updates that you have to deal with promptly if you want to keep it secure from ransom-ware hackers. I bought this with the expansion chassis, the RX-410, which comes in the same form-factor and cheap-o build quality, but there is such a terrible flaw in the construction where you cannot screw it into the rack with standard rack screws. The distance between the rack holes and the unit handles are 2mm too close. You have to use hex-key screws, which don't come with the unit. It's also loud fan-wise with no quieter after-market options. I emailed Synology to see if they could recommend a quieter fan-set and they were no help at all.

I would not recommend this product due to its cheap build quality. I do like the Synology software though, so look for some of their other solutions over this one.
