The Best Hendrix Documentary for Music Lovers That Exists

I've been a Hendrix fan since the his album, ARE YOU EXPERIENCED, that I heard one summer when I was at camp. Another one that I heard that summer was Cream's DISRAELI GEARS. I bought them both as soon as I got back home and they were the first of my 400 or so LPs, long since replaced by CD's and then direct digital downloads now totaling nearly 70 GB, most of it live recordings.

This documentary is simply superb in every way. For the casual millenial listener who wants to know who this guy was and what was the big deal to older fans like me who already knew most or all of the story but had not seen many of the clips of his live performances but knew them note for note by heart from endless listenings to vinyl releases of MONTEREY POP, HENDRIX IN THE WEST, RAINBOW BRIDGE (that was the first release of the entire 12:09 performance of Hear My Train A' Comin', arguably the best live blues from Jimi or anyone on the planet), WOODSTOCK, BAND OF GYPSIES, AND JIMI HENDRIX, ISLE OF WIGHT (recorded about one month before his death in 1970), this release is the best one of all.

There are other sources that go more deeply into Jimi's love of sci-fi and the specifics of his many relationships with women (one of which almost certainly contributed, at least in part, to his untimely death at 27)l, but if you want to see video of many classic live performances that you have been listening to (in my and many others' cases) for close to 50 years, this is it.

I especially liked seeing/hearing commentary from Eddie Kramer (Jimi's long-time studio engineer who helped him build the Electric Lady Studios recording studio, at the time perhaps the most sophisticated in the world), Paul McCartney, Billy Cox, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchel (I think only Paul and Eddie are still around).Read more ›

The train has unfortunately left the station

This is the most comprehensive depiction of the life and times of Jimi Hendrix. The production quality is excellent and the story is well written and compelling.

We did indeed lose a musical genius when Jimi left. You will know this by the end of the movie.

Gone Too Soon

I knew nothing about the man behind the legend and obvious talent. This film filled in the missing pieces for me. Very well done, informative and entertaining.
