I had wanted to replace my Aquatic Life T5 48" dual bulb (54 w each, one actinic, one daylight) with an LED canopy, to reduce power consumption and to reduce heat transfer into tank. The house does not have air conditioning, unnecessary in coastal Southern California, but the T5 fixture ran rather hot, and when the house got warm in late summer, tank temp was pushing 82 F. Bear in mind there are also three power heads (two skimmers, one water circulator), all three are MaxiJet 1200s, and these add heat to the water as well. I do not have any live coral.

Having already had an excellent experience with my first Aquatic Life T5 canopy, I again chose Aquatic Life for my first LED canopy. Customer service has been superb in the past, and I knew they offered limited lifetime (labor) warranties.

I've had the EDGE LED canopy running three days, here is a description of the aquarium set-up and first impressions.

Set-up: 90 gallon FOWLR (fish only, live rock with inverts/snails/shrimp/crabs) tank. Two 8" fish: blueface angel and clown/lineatus tang, both are 26 years old, purchased as babies in 1988. New set up because old tank sprang a leak. Re-used live rock and substrate of course. Coralline algae slowly spreading over live rock frags. Ammonia, nitrates, nitrates all zero; phosphates run 0-0.25, but I use tap water and Instant Ocean rather than R.O. It's possible that the trace phosphates in the tap water are inhibiting the coralline algae and/or encouraging green hair algae; there are patches of green hair here and there that the snails ignore. May not be high tech but you can't argue with 26 year-old fish.

Pro's:

1. Reduced power consumption. Program 1 operates the colored lights (red, blue), of which there are 20 @ 0.

I was relative new to aquatic lighting, but after doing some due diligence on my part I decided to try this Aquatic Life Edge light. They are one brand that you should seriously consider. I soon found out that Aquatic Life has an excellent reputation for customer support. They stand by their products and only charge for parts and shipping if your unit ever needs serviced. The other brands of led lighting either were too expensive for me or had too low of quality for me to consider for my 40 gallon freshwater tank.

After purchasing this Edge light fixture by Aquatic life, I noticed a couple things right away. First, the directions for programming the unit were lacking, but at least I found it fairly straight forward to program the timing of the light sequences. There are youtube videos online that are also very helpful.

Second, the leds in this are red, blue, and white. These colors separate out the sides and back of the aquarium when on simultaneously. Its a little distracting, but if you have just one of the colors on at a time, its not a problem. I have seen this kind of effect from several led lights in the past so its just an effect of leds themselves and not unique to this fixture. The color temperatures from this light fixture are more ideal for freshwater and so is the light output. Can you grow coral with this light and use for saltwater tanks?? Probably yes, but if your tank is really deep (greater than 18" deep) it maybe not the best idea. They are half a watt (.5) leds instead of the higher 1 or 3 watt leds. Lumen or light output is less per led, but the manufacturer puts more leds inside so lumen output is still pretty good.

I have had this light for a bit now. The timer function is nice and the light is ok however the light spectrum is not as strong as you would think. I ended up using my old exotec lite I had for my old 25g and modifying it to fit a 75g. So I now run 2 lights and now its up to the job of growing corals. If I knew what I know now I would not have gotten this light.
However it is a nice light. One thing to remember is that if you have corals you will need from 2 to 4.5 watts per LED per standard US gallon or just per gallon.
It is what it is.

Update 5/23/2015
The light just stopped working. So I do not know what to say. I am not happy right now, spent nearly $200.00 and now it's junk. Contacted the seller and have not had anyone contact me back.

Another update 5/28/2015
I have called the company 3 times no answer, right off to voice mail. Left a voice mail and nothing, emailed them several times no answers. Stay away from this seller they do not answer email or phone calls.

There's not much more to be said about this light that hasn't already been said. It's one of the best investments I've ever made on my 55g tank. The unit is built very solidly, and equally important, the adjustable legs are very sturdy. It is very thin, and lighter than an old T12 light fixture. The LED's are very bright (a good thing) and are suitable for a deep tank like my 55g. Given their strong output, I'm not sure about use in a very shallow tank, but for a deep tank, the lighting is spectacular. The programmable feature really takes this to the next level. You will simply be amazed when you watch the lights slowly ramp up (simulating sun rise), reach full intensity, then slowly fade (sunset). And I have to say, the blue moonlight LED's are icing on the cake. Being able to turn out the room lights and have my tank dimly lit up in pure blue light while watching TV is just fantastic.

I researched the heck out of LED lights before buying this unit, and I couldn't be happier. Absolutely worth every penny!

Edit - after several days' use, I want to add this: I don't understand the comments about programming being lost when power is cut. I organized all the wiring under my stand last night and had everything unplugged for at least two hours. When I plugged this unit back in and checked the programming, everything remained as it was. Perhaps there is some misunderstanding about how the timer system works. If you remove power, the programming will not kick in until the next programmed event. For example, my lights are programmed to be on between 7 and 10, then at 10 the moonlights come on. If I unplug the unit at 8:00 and plug it back in, the lights will not come on because the 7 o'clock triggering event has passed.
