Pros: Quality vegan ingredients. Cons: Odd taste

I admit that I know very little about protein powders. I make delicious lunch time smoothies with 8 oz. skim milk, frozen fruits, baby leaf spinach, and ice cubes in a Waring blender. Lately I’ve been experimenting with replacing skim milk with this Vega One Coconut Almond meal replacement powder blended in water.

The powder itself smells of coconut, almond and herbaceous greens. It tastes of greens and coconut with a strong stevia under taste.

Directions say to blend one level scoop of the powder into 1½ cups of ice cold water. There was no scoop provided in the tub (if there is one, it must be buried somewhere at the bottom) so I used a leftover scoop from a different product. I have no idea if I am adding too little, too much, or just the right amount of powder. NOTE: Using a chopstick, I dug around and discovered the scoop at the bottom of the tub. The scoop is huge! 94cc as opposed to the 39cc scoop that came with another powder. My first few tries, i wasn't using enough powder. Using the recommended amount does thicken the drink but also instensifies the odd flavor.

The powder does not blend well in ice cold water. I used tap water to blend the powder and then added some ice to the blender to get things cold. Just mixed with water and some ice, I got a thin, milky greenish liquid that was not very appetizing looking or particularly good tasting. I did drink it down without gagging and although it didn’t seem to be filling, I wasn’t very hungry for a couple of hours afterward.

Then I blended the same amount of powder and water and a cup of frozen berries. The addition of the frozen berries enhanced the drink enormously in texture and taste as did a later attempt with a half a banana and a cup of ice.

I could see getting bored with the coconut almond flavor and would think a vanilla flavor would be more versatile.

My wife suffered a devastating leg break that has required various surgeries and complete immobilization of her leg for over two months so far. The healing process has just begun though.
When discussing her diet the first thing that came up was protein for quicker recovery and lots of amino acids and vitamins.
About this time I saw the Vega One Plant Protein Powder and thought to give it a try.
Probiotics are a big deal in today's health community, and with all the chemicals she got at the hospital it seemed like a perfect mix to build the digestive system back up.
Checked it out with the doctor and nutritionist and they seemed pleased.
The texture is a pea protein so its a bit gritty, but mix it with a banana or some other fruit and you're good to go.
Of course, most folks want a review on enhanced workouts or marathon training, so they can have that forum which I will enthusiastically read.
When healing the body demands a ton of nutrition and this was just what we needed.
This review is what it does. IMHO, it helped greatly. She's lost weight, as expected, but mostly adipose and not as much muscle as feared.
Pleased with this product.

I've been using Garden of Life raw protein [especially Garden of Life RAW Organic Protein Vanilla, 631g Powder ]for a number of months and have been generally happy with it. I rarely have sugars except in fruits and vegetables, eat lots of raw foods, and the strong dried plant tastes don't bother me much. The product does have a gritty texture, but I usually add it to oat groats at breakfast, or in soups or smoothies at other times, so that goes away pretty quickly -- actually adds a bit of mouth feel. Reviewing the labeling convinces me to generally stick with Garden of Life.

This Vega product was a pretty close second choice and it has a sweet flavor, quite pleasant, and a very smooth consistency. So for a change of pace, and on a long trip where I want to beef up my veggie consumption, I plan to switch to this brand.

My wife made some jokes about how coconut and almond will be one bad tasting combination; she couldn’t be any more wrong. I really love the taste! I think it tastes as good as it smells and I was immediately excited about thinking about when can I have it again. I would say you can taste the coconut and maybe just a little of the almost. The green color was a bit different until you look at the packaging and realize there are greens in it. I am not a vegan, but I love the taste!

The drink has: protein, greens, vitamins & minerals, fiber, Omega-3, antioxidants and probiotics. It has 10 grams of carbohydrate, but 6 grams of fiber that cancel out most of the carbohydrate, in essence making this a low carbohydrate drink. I love the fact that there are a lot of vitamins in the drink. I do not consider the does of any of the vitamins to be too high of a level that it would interfere with my normal vitamin routine. After examining the package, my wife’s changed her tune and wanted to try it as well because of the nutritional value.

Whew! My buddy started drinking Soylent a while back, and is very gung-ho about its value as a single source meal replacement.

THIS stuff is similar... In that it's basically a complete meal replacement. It's got a ton of complete plant-based protein, half a day's worth of a broad range of vitamins and minerals, tastes great, which puts it head and shoulders above Soylent.

The only downside is it's fairly expensive, but you get what you pay for. Five stars from me. I wouldn't consider this a post workout protein, rather a quick healthy snack on the go. Easy to mix with water out milk when you're at your desk, or on the trail or just want something quick at home. Blended with ice and bananas and almond milk it makes a great healthy dessert shake.
