This headset is based on the standalone headphone ATH-A700X. Its very popular with gamers, and many have taken to modding their headphones with mics for gaming use. One of the biggest selling factors for this headset is that its an actual audiophile grade headphone with a mic attached. So sound quality is obviously quite nice. SQ compared to other headsets oriented towards gaming, this blows everything out of the water.

The G4ME Zero by sennheiser - which is in a similar price bracket - has higher impedance and is thus harder to drive. This means to really get the best sound out of the sennheisers, you need to have a dedicated amp. Without an amp the g4me zero sounds flat with no bass, while the AG1s have a very V shaped sound. With an dedicated headphone amp, the SQ is comparable. Strong bass and treb, not so apparent mids on both. The g4me zero also feels a bit heavier on the head, which can be fatiguing over long periods of wear. The sound quality on the microphones on both are comparable, though I did prefer the AG1's smaller and easier to adjust boom mic. The g4me zero has a volume dial on the headset to control volume on the fly, the AG1s do not have anything like that. Fit wise, I much prefer the 3d wing system of the AG1s. They feel more comfortable that a full headband - to me atleast - though I've heard that they may not fit well for some.

Also in the same price bracket is the Astro A40s + mixamp. For dedicated gaming, the A40s and mix amp really shine in its overall functionality. The ability to adjust game vs chat volume, overall volume and mute are things that the AG1 lack. The AG1 does have a mute button that activates when pushed and held. It stops muting once the button is released. I would have much rather have a on/off switch.

First off, let's just say that they're expensive. Very expensive. But usually price and quality go hand in hand, and for the Audio Technica ath-ag1, that is definetly the case.

First, let's start with the things that you might not like. The ergonomics on this headset is interesting, to say the least. They feature a well designed one-size-fits-all 3D wing system that is very comfortable and you barely notice that you are wearing them.I have fallen asleep with them on my head. However, they don't stay on very well. A little bit of headshaking and the headsets come off. Some people may find this annoying. I personally have no big problem with it. Still, after searching the web a little, I found a solution. Put a rubber band between the 3D wings and they stay on just fine. You will need to experiment with the right size for it to be perfect. The downside to this solution is that you sacrefice some comfort. I like them without the rubber band on, but that doesen't mean you do. The earcups themselves are huge. They fit around your ear without any problems, and still have a massive cushion of padded leather to remove any strain what so ever. Despite their size though, the're still not the kind of headsets that Sennheiser makes, which appearently are designed for elves. Some people might not like that the earcups are so big. I personally do.

Now for the things that really makd them shine. The sound. I will cover two types of sound in this review. The sound signature for music, and the sound in gaming in the next paragraph. If you're purely in it for the games, feel free to skip ahead, but I would advice not to. The Audio Technica ath-ag1s have a V shaped sound signature.

Style Name: ATHADG1 Open-Back Gaming Headset
Hello, this is D-Day, here with a special review of the Audio Techinca ADG1. Now, before I begin, let me explain some things.

DISCLAIMER NOTE:

Yes I am aware, at the time of this writing, Audio Technica had just annouced these gaming headsets at CES 2014. However, thanks to a special friend of mine and Amazon, my friend was able to get these and lend them to me prior to the annoucement, as Amazon had them listed way before their official revealing. As such, I am not only reviewing this for him, but for you all who have an interest. To that end, let us get down to business! I've got a gaming peripherial to review!

Introduction:

Audio Technica is definitely a force to be reckon within the audio world. Their ATH-AD700's is still regarded as the best overall option for gaming with an extenral microphone, and the ATH-M50 has been consistenly recommended as one of the best, if not the best headphone option's under $200. However, many, such as myself, were waiting to get their hands on their first gaming headset. Many people who had the AD700's have done them excellent service, but still, some of those people might not have liked those bunched up microphone wires hanging on the sides. So, this year at CES, we received word from the Japanese audio giant that they will be releasing gaming headsets: The closed back AG1, and the one I am reviewing, the ADG1. However, since they have yet to be released in the states, their price is high. In addition, other audio giants, like Sennheiser with their G4ME Zero and Beyerdynamic with their MMX 300, have already established footholds in gaming audio. Question is, at $440.00+ dollars, which is the most expensive standalone headset ever, how well does the ADG1 perform, and can it live up to its enormous price tag?
