This tool in principle is quite effective. Unfortunately in practice it is less so. It is quite burly and includes extension and sockets. But it’s quality of manufacture particularly on it’s business end, the output shaft, is rather dissapointing. The shaft is crudely ground, has no spring loaded ball bearing for socket hold and also undersized for supplied sockets. If you tip it downward they fall off. The rest of the tool and sockets in appearance seem quite good.

It’s offset “foot” has to be propped against an adjoining lug or rim side to serve as a torque base for the multiplier to push against. I found it’s base too large to sneak in between lugs so it tends to want to snub the rim. Protection like a wood block for decorative rims/lugs is a must. Once set up you must hold it, the socket and wood with just one hand to turn the crank with the other. That’s 16 pounds at arms length. As torque is applied the assemblage wants to walk out of the cupped rim with the foot just sliding outward along the smooth curved rim surface. Also, as you crank, the handle is long enough to hit the rim orb about half way around meaning you have to reset. This is on dump truck rims [ 22.5 “] meaning smaller car and RV’s would be even more constricted. I found it a real challenge to hold up and in, while it is preferring to go to the path of least resistance which is outward and disengaging from the socket. Since you have to go 58 turns to 1 on the lug, an extension is provided to use the crank directly with the sockets once broken free. Each lug set-up is different if you cannot rotate the tire, as with air brakes.

Having said all that on a flat face rim where you can get unobstructed access to nuts this tool works well as long as there is the solid base for the foot to lodge against.Read more ›
