When KISS put their war-paint back on and welcomed Ace Frehley and Peter Criss home from years as solo artists I originally thought, 'they are going to do a reunion tour, a fourth live album, and then a farewell tour.' But when Psycho Circus came out I was amazed that a group that had been together for almost thirty years could write such dynamic, powerful, and just plain fun songs! The opening (title) track, sung and co-written by Paul Stanley, nicely surmises the idea of the album, bizarre and sometimes dark, but always enjoyable 'You're in the Psycho Circus -and I say welcome to the show!' Then Gene Simmons comes screeching to the microphone on "Within." That, and Paul Stanley's "Dreamin'" have a much heavier and darker feel to them; the angry introspection so common on the "Revenge," or "Carnival of Souls" albums is back in full force, blending nicely with such anthems as "I Pledge Allegiance to the State of Rock and Roll." KISS proves here that they can still rock with a vengeance. On what is arguably the best song on the album "Raise your Glasses," I felt myself inspired from the energetic guitar solo nicely complimented by motivational lyrics and the rolling thunder of Peter Criss' drum intro. "You Wanted the Best," is an interesting way of showcasing the vocal talents of all four band members, each singing the lead on different parts of the song. Ace Frehley only contributed to the writing of one song on the album, "Into the Void," but it is classic space-man. He does a good job on vocals but really shines with the guitar solo, it is both technically complex and enjoyable to listen to.Read more ›

PSYCHO CIRCUS has been much maligned by both crtics and fans. It has also been praised by both; believe it or not both ROLLING STONE and ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY gave the album good reviews (I guess hell must really have frozen over!). The truth is that this is a solid Hard Rock album with a couple of great songs. Album opener "Psycho Circus" easily qualifies as a KISS classic. Both catchy and powerful, it is the perfect updating of their 70's style. "Within" is a dark, dynamic song from GENE who attempts to put a 90's spin on "God Of Thunder," with fairly successful results. "I Pledge Allegiance..." is one of those "good, but not as good as it should have been" songs. You hear some good ideas, and it is fairly catchy, but Paul's choice of working with co-writer Holly Knight sabotages any chance the song had of being a classic. Ace Frehley makes his one songwriting contribution with "Into The Void," easily one of the best songs he has co-written in 20 years, and one of the 3 new KISS classics on the album. "We Are One," is a good pop tune, with a very nice sentiment, but should not have been included on an album already overloaded with "pop" songs. "You Wanted The Best," on the other hand, is the third of the new KISS classics on the album. With a grinding riff over a "Ballroom Blitz," or "Kickstart My Heart" type drum part, it sounds the most like KISS from the 70's out of all the songs on PSYCHO CIRCUS. Paul Stanley makes one of his best "Pop-Metal" contributions ever with "Raise Your Glasses," one of the most infectiously catchy songs of the last 10 years, not just from KISS, but from anyone.Read more ›

Yes, the carnival has just begun! This is one of the KISS albums that deserves more credit than it has gotten. This is the first time this album has ever been pressed on vinyl, and it is amazing! Sounds so much better than it ever did on CD. Yes, it's more expensive to buy this on vinyl vs the CD version, but it's worth it. You get deeper and more quality sound with this than you do with digital, and that in my opinion, is worth paying for.

There is always something to the ritual of getting up and putting the record on the platter and gently placing the needle down on the edge of the record, sitting down, and listening to the best sounds of the music. As I have said, the carnival has just begun, and the music is the fun!

With a slow churning build-up that segues into drums and Paul Stanley screaming out, "Yeahhhh," Psycho Circus supposedly heralded the return of KISS in all of its original glory on a brand new album in 1998. While fans rejoiced over the original lineup's return, Psycho Circus would prove to be just one more controversial part of the ongoing Stanley/Gene Simmons versus Ace Frehley/Peter Criss debate.

Stanley, Simmons, and former bandmates Frehley and Criss reunited in 1995 to the surprise of fans sitting in on the recording of the band's KISS Unplugged album and television program. Frehley and Criss sat in for a few songs along with Stanley, Simmons, and then current drummer, Eric Singer, and lead guitarist, Bruce Kulick. The reunion was so well received that the four original members decided to get back together and go on a highly successful two year reunion tour.

This lead up to the recording and release of Psycho Circus. Frehley's "Space Ace" and Criss' "Catman" images were on the album cover, but much like the last few albums that featured the duo before their individual exits, their actual musical contributions were very limited.

Criss played drums on only one song. Kevin Valentine, who worked with KISS on Revenge, played the drums on the rest of the album. Ace Frehley recorded guitar tracks for two of the album's songs, but the rest of his string duties were recorded by his eventual replacement in the band and current "Spaceman," Tommy Thayer.

Considering these factors, Psycho Circus managed to turn into a decent album that has managed to remain one of KISS' heaviest albums to date.Read more ›
