As an IT engineer I've long been impressed with the durability of Hitachi drives. I currently have several 3 TB Hitachi drives running in my NAS. They have run 24/7 for more that four years without a single fault of any kind, as determined by S.M.A.R.T. data which I download every two months. In a Backblaze (cloud storage provider) blog they compare their experience with about 30,000 hard drives. Their Hitachi drives substantially out last others, especially Seagate and Western Digital.

I bought this drive after I started getting S.M.A.R.T. errors on my Seagate 2TB 7200.14 drive. According to a popular blog post on Backblaze, they have charted the failure rates of 39,696 drives as of December 31, 2014. HGST drives are by far the most reliable. I am not allowed to link to the article but it is titled "What is the Best Hard Drive?" It is easy to find.

After hooking this drive up to my computer, I formatted it in Windows 7 and ran a sequential read/write test with CrystalDiskMark 3.0.3 x64. Both read and write speeds were about 170 MB/s, which is the fastest I have ever seen from a rotating disk that I have owned. After transferring about 1.5TB of files to the drive and defragmenting it, the speeds slowed down to about 150 MB/s read and write.

System specs:

Intel Core i7-4790k
16GB RAM
Asus Z97 Extreme4 Motherboard
Intel 520 Series SSD w/ Windows 7 x64 Ultimate
HGST 4TB drive connected to Intel Z97 chipset SATA III 6 Gb/s port

First HGST brand drive I've bought due to the price per size. So far they have been good, quiet and no smart issues.
I will say they do start out fast but once filled up 75%+ they tend to slow down quite a bit which for a 64MB cache drive they could be faster.

I have 5+ year old Seagate drives which at the same fill rate are actually faster then the HGST NAS so that is a disappointment.

I've bought nothing but WD the past 5 years but the SE and RE drives are much more expensive, run hotter and consume more power but do have a better warranty so I took a chance with HGST.

Here are some benches I did when they were new and I was testing them out in different configurations.

Intel controller:
Sequential Read : 157.234 MB/s
Sequential Write : 152.631 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 80.351 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 97.059 MB/s

Marvell controller:
Sequential Read : 153.575 MB/s
Sequential Write : 149.040 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 75.959 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 92.840 MB/s

Intel controller raid0
Sequential Read : 529.409 MB/s
Sequential Write : 285.578 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 503.219 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 183.240 MB/s

Intel controller raid1
Sequential Read : 167.987 MB/s
Sequential Write : 163.000 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 56.932 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 78.967 MB/s

HDtune:

Minimum 85MB
Maximum 164MB
Average 129MB

Access time 15ms

Burst 313MB

As you can see in raid0 [or raid10] these drives can really haul, course bear in mind they were empty and you will not
see such numbers as you get over 50% full.

I bought four of these drives and put them into a Promise Pegasus2 R4 with RAID 5. With this setup I benchmark about 470 MB/s write and 360 MB/s read with Blackmagic Disk Speed Test. These speeds are well in excess of the speeds you will be able to achieve with a NAS, the marketed purpose for the drives. Only time will tell whether these drives will be reliable, but with none DOA they're off to a good start.

I bought 4x3TB drives for my RAID enclosure. They will be running in RAID 10 and will be used in a media/file server for my home network. I ran 3 runs to certify each of drive (took about 30 hours to complete) and none of the drives encountered any errors. My only complaint is these run a little louder than I thought and can easily be heard from about 10-15 feet away from the enclosure. I was under the impression that these would be much quieter. I have all 4 of the Hitachi drives inside an OWC ThunderBay 4 Enclosure and have replaced the stock fan with a Noctua fan. The enclosure is attached via Thunderbolt to a 2012 Mac Mini with i7 2.3ghz CPU and 16GB 1600Mhz Corsair Vengeance Memory. While I am really picky about noise, I will not dock a star since I bought these drives for reliability.

I found these drives from reliability tests run by a reputable cloud storage company. Hitachi was way more reliable than any other company out there. I have no doubt that these drives will be reliable and last me for a long time! I do, however, wish the warranty was longer than 3 years...would like to see a 5 year warranty at a minimum, but oh well. These seem to run cool so far.

SPEED TEST: I used Black Magic Speed Test (Ran on OS X Yosemite with 5GB Test File)

1 Drive:
Read Speed: 156 MB/s
Write Speed: 155 MB/s

4 Drives in RAID 10:
Read Speed: 305 MB/s
Write Speed: 301 MB/s

4 Drives in RAID 0 (just for fun)
Read Speed: 608 MB/s
Write Speed: 603 MB/s

If you are looking for a fast, reliable hard drive to run in a 24/7 NAS/RAID environment, look no further...this is the drive for you. If you require a quiet drive (i.e. audio recording environment) then I would try to find a quieter NAS drive.
