We have been using this for about 5 months and loved it. We are able to see how active our dog has been. The bad part is the mount isn't designed very well and ours has already broken. You have to bend the plastic to remove the device for charging and due to a weak part of the mount it breaks easily. When this happens you run the risk of losing the device rather easily. I have emailed support and got an automated response, but still nothing after a week. If you are considering one of these loosely attach a $100 bill to your dogs collar and go for a walk. Sound like fun? It's not, so now it sits on the kitchen counter and emails us a report about it not moving or notifies us that it needs charging. Too bad since we really liked it. I don't want to rate it 1 star, but with the problems I feel I have no choice.

I'll admit I was skeptical when I first read about Whistle and "wearables" for dogs that embraced the recent trend of fitness and activity trackers for humans (FitBit, Jawbone UP, Nike Fuelband, etc.). I had previously embraced wearables for myself (I owned a Fuelband until went kaput, currently own a Jawbone UP24), but couldn't bring myself to justify a device like that for my dog.

I was fortunate enough to receive a Whistle from the kind folks at Whistle through a social media contest they ran earlier this year. Set up was a breeze: you sync the device with your home wi-fi network and your phone via Bluetooth. Enter your dog's information (age, weight, breed, etc.), and you receive a range of "goals" for daily activity based on other dogs of the same breed. I went with a daily goal about 10 minutes higher than the average for my dog's breed.

One added, unexpected bonus is that I'm able to keep track of the daily afternoon walks my dog goes on with the dog walker we've hired. I can see what time he gets taken out, how long he walks, etc. Super helpful for planning when he needs to go out next and whether or not he was walked long enough.

Within just a couple of days, it was clear that I had probably been shortchanging my dog on walks for a while, as we were always trying to squeeze in a few extra minutes at the end of each night so he could meet his goal. Eventually I was able to craft a daily routine that gets him there between his morning, afternoon, and evening walks (with some playtime in between, of course), and he's hit that goal every day for nearly three months now.

I've had my Whistle for about four months now, and although I was VERY hesitant to buy it at first, it turned out to be a lifesaver for me. You see, I've never owned a young dog before and fell in love with her before I realized how much energy and bad behaviors she had. Whistle was just the next thing to try in an act of desperation, but it definitely turned out to be a worthwhile investment. You clip the device onto your dog's collar and then download the Whistle app to your phone. The app gives you a target exercise goal based on your dog's breed, and you can play around with it based on what works for your dog. I've set my dog's exercise goal to 130 minutes/day, and so I'm constantly checking her activity log throughout the day to make sure she's reached it by day's end. That way she is too tired to act up in the house and she sleeps soundly through the night. Prior to purchasing the Whistle, we had enlisted the help of a trainer (for barking, destructive chewing, and playing too rough in the house). Now that our dog gets the exercise she needs, those behaviors have melted away (and pretty quickly I may add).

Not only is it a great tool for tracking the number of minutes that your dog is active throughout the day, but you can also log daily notes about feeding and medicine schedules. You can also take photos of your pup through the Whistle app. This is great if you have a dog walker or split custody of your dog, that way you have cute pics and up to date info at your fingertips. It gets even better b/c Whistle has free community events so that they can get feedback on their product and continuously make improvements.

My only two quips are that sometimes the device doesn't sync to your phone quickly, so I'm constanting refreshing for 5 minutes until it updates.Read more ›

An interesting way to gauge how much activity and keep a diary of food and other notes about your dog.

The device itself was sturdy, waterproof and stayed clasped with the double locking rubber strap. It kept the Whistle close to the neck and out of the way. We played with location a couple times on the collar to see where it didn't bother the pet and was out of the way. Where they wear it on the collar should not matter or activity monitoring.

The app had a few issues with configuration, that we cover in the video, but once past that it worked great. Walking through setup was simple. Just remember to NOT delete the Duke sample pet until you are done and make sure the wifi is viewable for setup. It does not support setting up against hidden wifi names. It has to be able to scan (and enter a password if needed).

It showed the trends and allowed us to enter notes and food amounts easily and quickly. Seeing the activity while away as it synched via wifi was great. I can see using this for talk walkers to make sure they are actually taking your dog out. The trees is helpful in seeing if you dog is slowing down in activity, maybe showing signs of a problem. You can also see regular sleep patterns with this and times they may go outside. This is helpful in planning for letting the dog out as well.

Multiple owners and phone support was cool so the same pet can be tracked across households and owners/locations. A neat way for a family to see the pet.

Overall I cannot wait for the app to get more functionality. Until then it is kind of cool but not a huge benefit for those always around their pet. A decent benefit for those that want to track their pet more when they are not around.
