My dogs thoroughly enjoyed this from the first bite and they are very picky, so their opinion is definitely a consideration. If your dogs are picky, this is very flavorful.

Like most owner's, I want a dog food that is both healthy and enjoyed by my dogs. Hill's Ideal Balance Small Breed Natural Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe Mature Adult Dry Dog Food is a comprehensive formulation with well considered ingredients. Dogs have been carnivores for many millenniums, so I lean toward brands that start with meat (Chicken in this case), which Hill's states protein is at least 18% of the food source.

So what else does it contain?

I review dog food on only two principles: 1) whether dog eats it and 2) nutritional value (without being overly strict). In both instances, this dog food is 5 stars.

Our dog devoured this food. All we feed her is dry food with absolutely no exceptions. We were a little surprised at how fast she took to this food because she normally requires us to mix in the new food with her old food to transition. In this case, we did not have to do that.

We were satisfied with the nutritional contents as well. Though a few consumer sites rated this dog food as only average, we believe the nutritional value is well balanced. After two weeks of use, energy level is same and her coat appears to be just as healthy as before. Nail growth appears to be much faster now however.

Overall I am very happy with this product at the current price point.

I fed this to my 13 year old Toy Fox Terrier. She didn't complain, except to say it would be better if I would put some of the steak I was eating in it or maybe some of the leftover pizza from the fridge. When I asked if she liked it she gave me a condescending look and said,"About as much as one can 'like' dog food. Are you going to finish that steak? Maybe we can trade and I'll review that steak for you." I took that as a 'yes'. She's gotten pretty sarcastic in her old age.

Because my dog had high liver enzymes, the vet asked me to put her on a low protein food. We searched high and low, until we came upon this one. She had been eating organic food all her life, so it was a big switch. She is a senior with multiple health problems, but the kibble is small and she seems to really like the food. It meets her veterinary requirements as far as low protein, and it's easy on her stomach. (We tried other foods, which gave her vomiting, due to the protein being too high) It's also a little cheaper to buy and have it delivered through amazon, so I like the convenience! I would give it 5 stars, if it was organic!

Hill's Ideal Balance dry dog food makes my Jack Russell a happy pooch. I have tried many high end foods, but sadly upsets his tummy. I either buy this version or the one for small breed seniors as Cosmo is now seven years old. The price I paid was much lower than the local pet store chains. Rarely is this on sale, and only then certain versions. I've never seen a coupon as well. The morsels are small and easy to chew and digest and Cosmo has about 1.5 cups per day. His tummy is happy and so am I. Ideal balance has limited ingredients and is fortified with healthy nutrients. No chicken pieces parts for my little Cosmo. Only healthy good stuff. Now, if it only would make him listen better to me I would be so happy.

Having this delivered instead of schlepping to the pet store is a real time saver for me.

My 12 lb. Shih-Tzu Emma has never been too keen on dry food. She has, however, taken quite well to this brand of small breed formula. Served on its own or mixed with a healthy canned dog food, Hill's Ideal Balance seems to be a winner. Most importantly, the ingredients used allow you to feel good about what you're feeding your dog. With no preservatives and lots of wholesome meat and rice/oats for your dog to enjoy, this is a great product.

My dog does very well on the Hill's Ideal Balance - Chicken and Brown Rice. He has gotten ill from the other big name brands, he has less episodes of vomiting and diarrhea on this brand, he still is not crazy about kibble so I still mix with boiled chicken to get him to eat. My only complaint about ordering is I clicked the "Small" breed option, it was set on the 15 lb bag, I opted for the 30 lb bag (less expensive by weight), unbeknownst by me it auto changed to "Large" breed. Now I am stuck with 30 lbs of large kibble with a small dog. The kibble size is a lot larger than what he is used to eating; I guess I will be smashing kibble with a hammer for a long time to come. I will be more careful when ordering, IF I order dog food from Amazon again.
