Nasacort or "triamcinolone" is a corticosteroid which just recently became available to purchase without a prescription. It is currently the only over the counter steroid nasal spray available.

Unlike nasal sprays which cause blood vessels to immediately constrict, steroids take some time to become effective. Steroids in general work to "turn off" the immune system/inflammation. In this case, because the steroid is being applied to a specific area of the body, it will only affect that area.\

It may take up to 2 weeks of continued use before an improvement is noticed.

Nasal sprays like Afrin work immediately to reduce nasal inflammation, but continued use is not recommended. Afrin and other nasal sprays which use Oxymetazoline or other similar compounds can cause rebound congestion after just a few days of usage as well as other severe issues with chronic usage. Steroid nasal sprays are usually safe to be taken for long periods of time and have pretty mild side effects such as dry nose which can lead to nosebleeds.

Nasacort should only be used for the treatment of allergies, as it won't be very effective for nasal congestion caused by the flu or cold and may in fact increase the duration of the sickness.

Effectiveness at reducing nasal congestion (all causes , 1-10 scale):
#########################################################
10: Afrin - Oxymetazoline
8: Pseudoephedrine 120mg
6-7: Nasacort/Nasal Steroids
2-3: Phenylephrine

When the body of an allergy sufferer detects something foreign like pollen, it will mount a defense against that particle.

This stuff has been a godsend. I have suffered from severe allergies to dust, hay, animals and pollen my whole life. As I've gotten older they've gotten worse. Every spring and fall I'm in constant agony, in spite of taking Benadryl at night, Sudafed and Allegra in the morning, and using a Neti pot. I have had pretty much chronic rhinitis, which is an inflammation of the nasal passages, caused by my allergies, and I have also gotten sinus infections from the constant congestion. Additionally, I get a cough, sore throat, itchy eyes and sometimes a skin rash, all made much worse by seasonal allergies. During allergy season I can hardly stand to pet my dogs or be anywhere near my guinea pig, and the timothy hay she eats has shown me the true meaning of hay fever. All of that has stopped since I started using Nasacort. It's almost like I'm a new person, not plagued by any allergies at all. Spring comes early where I live, and some of the trees I'm most allergic to start pollinating in early February. My allergies came on full force and I suffered for a few weeks, even missing work one day. After trying everything I could, I went searching for something new. I was skeptical about a nasal spray, because I had tried Flonase before and it didn't work. But I was so desperate that I gave it a try, and within a few hours I felt amazingly better. I didn't expect it to help with my other symptoms, but it's decreased the coughing and itching and sneezing so much that I've stopped taking Allegra. It's also a decent price for being a prescription medication that just went OTC, and is actually cheaper than Flonase used to be for me. Definitely worth a try for anyone who is suffering with nasal allergies.

I have suffered all my life from allergies both indoor and outdoor, so there was never any relief seasonally. I have in the past gotten prescription steroid sprays, but had to make doctor visits costing over $100.00 a visit which I greatly resented. I tried to treat them in the last few years with Allegra and Afrin. Naturally, using the Afrin every day caused rebound congestion, and the Allegra was worthless. I cannot take Allegra D because the decongestant drug caused insomnia. When I say Nasacort in the drug store with a sign saying "Coming Soon" I was beyond grateful. Someone named Bruni has a comment on his/her review that people with Afrin addictions probably won't be helped by this product. That is not true at all. Within 3 days, I was able to breathe, breathe, breathe!!!! No more sneezing 20 times in the morning with an hour or two after using Afrin to clear out all the congestion, just to repeat the cycle within 8 hours if I was lucky.

Update:
Well, all good things must come to an end or so they say, and that applies to this product. Unfortunately for me, I developed debilitating insomnia after about 3 weeks of using. I at first, did not connect the two until I read another review, then I started putting 2 and 2 together. About 3 days after discontinuing, my insomnia cleared up. When I say insomnia, I mean no sleep whatsoever. I was laying in bed for 8 hours wide awake for literally 3 nights in a row and having to get up and go to work anyway. Horrible!! This is a steroid! Be careful....

So, I've tried Flonase, Nasocort and the new prescription med Dymista. None of these completely relieve my symptoms. I'm also taking Singulair which, unlike all the anti histamine pills (Allegra, etc.) I've tried, actually works pretty good. Here are my experiences:

Flonase: Useless because it causes nosebleeds and has some kind of skunk oil (fragrance/perfume) added, which is a further irritant.

Nasocort: 50 - 60% improvement without side effects.

Dymista: 60 - 70% improvement but with some nasal irritation. Also very expensive and my health plan doesn't cover it.
