Tiny & quiet, but pretty powerful!

I was looking for an small PC that I can use in the living room. Because I do not want use that 'smart part' of the my smart TV.

My requirements were:
- small
- fast
- quiet, especially under ordinary load (video/audio streaming, internet)
- Low power consumption in idle mode.
- full hardware support under Linux.

Well, this BRIX PC is the perfect match for me.

Because I've placed it behind a door of the TV sideboard together with the cable modem. By using the TV as monitor, the active speaker boxes for audio and a wireless keyboard with touchpad, I've a nice setup with a important side effect: Nothing has left that my nosy little kids still could touch.

My configuration:

- SSD: Samsung 840 EVO mSATA (MZ-MTE500BW)
- Memory: Corsair 16GB (2x8GB) PC3-12800 (CMSO16GX3M2C1600C11)
- Keyboard/Mouse: Logitech TK820
- Camera: Logitech C920
- External Drive: portable DVD Writer
- OS: Gnome Ubuntu 14.04
- Audio: Active Speaker

Everything works as desired: Hassle free, quiet, cool and pretty fast (i.e. the login screen appears 9s after powering up).
Almost all apps are starting immediately - only GIMP needs 3 seconds to start.

Happily ever after!

Pretty nice so far. Fast, powerful, quiet, and fairly cool.

Ok...so I've had this for a short time and I'm putting it through it's paces.

I loaded it up with with the best that I could find at the time:

- Win7 Pro 64-Bit (needed a little extra functionality from PRO, otherwise Home Premium should suffice for most): http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H09BOXQ/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Total is just a shade over a grand. No need to buy a WiFi and/or BT card, as it already comes with one that seems to work fairly well. I haven't installed an additional SATA drive yet, but I intend to install one I have laying around. So, if you want an additional 6Gbps SATA drive, take that cost into consideration. Also, you'll need a USB DVD drive to install drivers, Windows, etc.

I'm using it to drive a 1440p monitor, which I thought would be an issue without a dedicated graphics card, but everything is running smoothly. Great, but there is a minor problem...

What a great product! It was extremely simple to work with and install both the hard drive and memory. The only draw back I encountered was the disk provided for the system drivers, e.g. network, video, audio, etc., was just that, a disk. Since the system has no cd-rom (because it is not big enough to house one), the disk needed to be copied to a flash drive (or network drive if you have one) using another computer. Once the files were copied to the Gigabyte the installation of drivers was simple and quick.

We chose to install a SSD so there is, literally, no noise from the system. Also, with the installation of Windows 8.1, the boot time is around 17 seconds! Nice!

I installed 16GB of RAM and a 500GB SSD in this, and loaded an OEM version of Windows 10 without any issues. It's been running for about a month now, and all is well. Totally silent and stays cool. We hide it behind our 23" monitor where it runs 24/7. Only negative is the relatively high price.
