We are using this unit as NAS. We are not using the fancy download software. It is working well in this capacity. I marked it down one stsr because hes no instructions on how to simply set it up a as NAS. It is quite fast over our outdated 10-100 system.

Awesome NAS unit! Works well streaming HD videos! Fairly easy to set up and can be as sophisticated as you want it to be! Two tips: 1.) it only comes with a quick set up manual... Download the complete owners manual FIRST and READ it! Lots of nice advanced features that your other manual doesn't tell you! 2.) Be patient after installing the hardware... Sometimes it times out initially when finding the server. Wait 5-7 minutes and try again and you'll instantly find it.

So far, so good! After figuring out the software, I started copying everything the "old fashioned way" to the network drive it creates. It automatically copied all my iPad files--photos, music, and even the PDFs and such. I've got almost everything backed up from several machines in less than a day, but with redundant files overwritten, it's only about 250 GB!

I've had this unit a few months. The software is HIDEOUS but the only real way to access the unit from the internet. The unit does work well as a local mapped drive but, again, data transfer is creeping slow. Apparently its transfer rate is set that way because the internet switch I have it hooked to notes the connection as slow while all others are fine. A few weeks ago now, my network map to this device disappeared. I fiddled with it but could not re-map the drive share on my primary computer, repeatedly receiving the error message that the local security authority database contained inconsistencies. At that time, I was able to access the unit from my iphone and laptop only. I began a mad dash to download files, one by one, on my laptop. (The Canvio software does not allow folder downloads.) I had most of my stuff backed up but unfortunately not all. I called Toshiba tech support and was sent to a tier-2 tech who barely knew how to say the name of the product. He promised to call me back within 24 hours and ten days later I haven't heard a word from him.

I was able to access the unit's Twonky server but that allowed only access to the media files on the unit, not the documents and other files. After that, the unit's "advanced use" web interface began returning a PHP error and said my login information was incorrect no matter what combination of user name and password I put in. I had the bright idea to reset the unit, which, according to the documentation, was supposed to reset the user name and password to "admin." No such luck and then I was unable to access the unit at all, even with my normal user name and password. I found registry and database entries with two different passwords, one of which I had never heard of before.

Ok I would like to start off by saying I like the product. This is a real user writing this which I paid for it.

Toshiba can you please get a faster internet link for your software updates. The first unit I bought needed 5 files to be updated and it took over 6hours to do and I am on a 150Mbit link. The software up would keep getting an error so after trying many things I decided to logout and log back in as admin on my widow 10 machine and that is when the software up worked even after 6 hours to download.
Pros
I think this is a good unit for storing files and streaming video. I mean what the heck I paid $84 so that is about the same cost of a 2tb usb drive so why not try one. I even took the plunge and got a second one.
I like the fact it stands up and looks good very heavy also feels like well manufactured.
I think the transfer speed is not to bad but could be faster I would get around 22MiB/s The pc I did the transfer with is a linux Dolphin install so I know it can do more then that cause on another unit I have it does 32MiB/s.
All in all it is a good product for NAS and media streaming. I have not tried the remote feature yet. For the cost it is worth a try at least for me it was.
Cons
Ok here goes the software is really bad they must not have done anything with the software since they started selling it.
Once I found out that when you login with the username you created click on advanced and it will launch a web browser so you can change the admin password and then you have full access to every thing.
The second one I bought only needed one file updated so I am not sure if it was new or not????
The server that give the PIN numbers has not been working for the last 4 days so could not try the remote feature

Very easy setup and so far, it has functioned flawlessly. I find the software interface a bit clunky, but I've also seen far worse.

The unit was defective upon arrival. After trying several times to install the software and configure this drive, I called Toshiba tech support. The rep fumbled around, took control of my Mac and couldn't do any better than I did. Toshiba did determine the unit was defective and told me to return it or replace it. I'll take door number 2, thanks.

This thing ships with nothing you can call documentation. There is a, "Quick Start Guide," in three languages. Whoopee! The guide needs renaming to something like, "Quick Guide To Disappointment." On Toshiba's website there is loads of documentation, none of which actually seemed to followed or apply to what showed up on my monitor as I wrestled with this sucker.

I do need to mention that after the numerous attempts to install this low-tech, high-frustration device, and allowing someone to take control of my Mac, about half the files--system, utilities and work product--were damaged. After I finish this review, it will likely take several hours to undo the damage.
