The Oyen Digital Shadow Mini portable SSD is a small and lightweight drive that packs considerable space and fast speeds in a pocketable form factor that is also extremely attractive. In this review, I will highlight aspects of the design, my usage of the drive, and speed.

DESIGN:
I was sent the silver color of the drive, and being an Apple fan, I loved the color because it matches my MacBook Pro. Check out the picture I posted in the customer images section to see what I mean. The drive comes in what seems to be an aluminum housing, and it feels very solid to the touch. There’s a very unobtrusive logo and model of Oyen Digital “Shadow Mini” on the front in white writing, and on one of the sides of the device, there’s the USB connector and status light. The bottom of the drive features four rubber non-slip feet, which in my opinion weren’t entirely necessary considering the portability factor of the drive, but it’s nice to have when placing on a surface like a desk or table. The drive also comes with a black USB cable that’s about 1.5 feet long. I would’ve preferred a shorter cable for more portability, but it’s not considerably long, so it will come down to your own personal preference.

USAGE:
I’ve been using this drive for the past week and a half to store movies, large lecture files, etc, and I’ve been carrying it around in my pocket to take to friend’s places or to school for sharing. Considering how light and small it is, it’s extremely easy to carry around. I’ve tested other solid state drives before, and while this is not the smallest of the bunch, it’s still extremely portable. It might not fit as well in women’s jeans as it does in men’s, but it’s still very light and easy to carry around.Read more ›

Tested the read and write speed and got following:

Write 266MBps
Read ~400MBps

These are great numbers!

Works exceptionally well with my mid-2015 Retina Macbook Pro. I have partitioned 50GB of space on my Mac's internal SSD as a bootcamp drive and I use the ShadowMini as a second drive in my Windows 8 installation on which every program, apart from the base Windows files, is installed. I have installed Microsoft Office, Steam (with a handful of games) and a couple of Windows utilities to the ShadowMini and everything runs smoothly and seamlessly off the drive. I get very good read/write speeds of about 350-380 Mbps which are far higher than anything delivered by a traditional external drive. Games like Far Cry 4, load fairly quickly and run without hiccups. I have stuck the drive with double sided tape to the lid of my MacBook so that its always there. This drive suits my purpose exactly as I had intended and expected and therefore, deserves a full 5 star rating.

The downsides include the heat generation of the unit over a period of sustained use, especially gaming. It can get very hot but so far, it doesn't seem to affect its performance. In addition, the USB 3.0 cable that came with the unit was a little loose fitting and the laptop would show disconnections of the drive frequently when moved. Switching the default cable with that of a Seagate Backup Plus drive solved that problem.

I'm using it with a 2013 Mac Pro to hold my "home" folder and it is a massive improvement over the 7200RPM rotational drives I was using via Thunderbolt 1. I'm getting write speeds (USB 3.0) of 365MBps and read speeds of 350MBps. Beautiful design as well, small, unobtrusive & bus powered. Can't speak to the long term reliability but a nice drive to go with the new Mac Pro if yours is the stock configuration with a 256GB PCIe internal drive.

Fastest USB3 SSD drive I've seen so far. Write speed is about 390 MB/s and the read speed is 420 MB/s. This is very close to the internal speed of my 2012 Air. Very impressive. Perfect for bootable backups and fast enough to run Virtual Machine files from it.

This drive comes in a matte black Aluminum case. It is smaller and lighter than a regular 2.5" internal drive. Has a nice carrying pouch as well. Overall the quality is very nice.

I can recommend this drive to anyone who needs a fast and a portable expansion.

I will not buy any storage devices with spinning disks, whether Western Digital or Seagate. This Shadow Mini is extremely reliable and with far, far, far less risk of losing files that the "spinning disk" garbage drives. If you are looking for reliability and dependability, you've found it with this Shadow Mini solid disk drive. Just plug it into the computer's USB drive and its set to go.

I love this drive! It is VERY fast at transferring​ data, and I don't have to worry about drops damaging the drive. However, I have noticed that if you leave it plugged in for a long period, the drive gets really hot.
