I would give this 5 stars, but it was a little tricky setting up for 8.1. The product is great after you get it installed right. I went from 2 bars to 4 bars on the chart thing. For the record my internet connection is in my moms house across the road in the living room, so the signal is going threw 3 walls, 50 across the road and another wall in house.

now for the install. first go to the web page and down load the 8.1 drivers. leave them zipped for now. Now insert the disk and install the drivers for the right product. It might tell you to connect the device, do so. Then go to the downloaded zip files and extract them all. After you extract them you have to go to the folder you extracted and open it. Go to the setup exe and click on it and install. Your comp will have to restart after the disk install and after the download install but it will work. Also get rid of the usb base and use a usb extender cable. It took me about 4 hours to figure this install out lol.

I have had an Apple Airport Extreme for many years and it finally did not power up one day so I quickly narrowed in on an Asus RT-AC68U and it works for the two Macs and several windows machines in our house. Since it has 801.11AC I wanted to bring my older Apple machines up to that speed and went on the market for a good USB adapter that would work with OSX Yosemite. I have never had a problem buying an -N adapter and using it interchangeably between windows and OSX but -AC adapters seem to be different in this. I tried a Netgear A6200 and learned there were no drivers for OSX. I looked at several other "name" brands and they either had no OSX drivers at all or the last working driver was for 10.8 and Yosemite is 10.10.

I finally stumbled on this adapter and after downloading the 10.10 driver from thee Netis web site it connected and works great. I have done limited testing so far but the results are promising. I have a late 2012 Mac Mini that is two floors and 50 horizontal feet from the Asus router. Comparing the Netis adapter to the Mini's internal wireless i saw a 40% improvement in transferring a file from my Mini to a linux server that has an ethernet connection to the router. On reading files the transfer improvement was 100-140%. When testing internet access there was no difference because Comcast is the bottleneck.

The software is fairly barebones but it was easy to look through the list of available networks, click on mine and then enter the password. I have seen 85-90% signal strength and given the about of wood and drywall between the router and my office I am happy with that. The USB extender cable & cradle has a cable length of over 5' 6" which made it possible for me to position the antennas where they got good reception and did not clutter my desk.

Quite happy with this product. It is certainly worth $24 USD i paid for it. I am using it right now as I type this review. I am 1/2 a mile away from our home, typing from our guesthouse located directly across one of our ponds. This adapter is picking up the wireless signal in our home at 97-100% signal strength with a "straight line of sight" to our satellite. Great product, absolutely worth what i paid for - picks up "b/g/n" as well at 300 mbps.

My first impression of this product was not good. I purchased this device hoping it would deliver better signal strength than my ageing Rosewill b,g USB dongle. It did not perform as desired. The indicated signal strength with this device, for every network in range, was approximately 20 percent less than indicated for the old Rosewill device. I was, to say the least, disappointed.

However, a closer look showed the the "Link Quality" for each discovered network was substantially better that the corresponding Link Quality on the Rosewill device. And, the data transfer rate (the speed) for each associated network was faster than provided by the Rosewill device. It's more than a bit counter intuitive for a device with greatly reduced signal strength to produce improved Link Quality and Speed but, what the heck - if it works, it works!

Packaging was very good, installation was effortless, and the provided "dock" is the handiest USB extension cord I've come across. As a bonus, this device runs a lot cooler than the old Rosewill dongle. What's not to love?

I had been having problems with comcast internet speeds not being up to the levels I was paying for. After trying a new router it helped but I must have moved the antennas on it and despite 4 or 5 of 5 "antenna strength bars" I wasn't getting more than half the speed I should have. This was not instantly recognized in win8 for me like some people said. It wasn't recognized and the light was not on. After loading the included cd install program the drivers made it work on reboot. Some people have said under win 8.1 it doesn't work good unless you install the generic realtek 8812AU chipset's drivers which can be found on the internet. I do like the base. The device with antennas is bulky and allows better positioning out of the way with the base. I found it provides 50+Mbs speeds on both the usb 2.0 or 3.0 port so don't worry if you don't have a free 3.0 port. As long as it lasts a few years I'd give it 5 stars. I could see the use for this in other situations e.g. if you have an outdoor or RV location or room far from the router and want to get a decent signal. I see many more neighbors routers with this than the computer's installed wifi. If we were back in the days of mostly unsecured routers this item could provide free internet. Oh one last thought I wanted to try 5ghz band available on my router and not seen by my laptop. The speeds were the same 2.4 vs 5ghz.
UPDATE: a year later and with heavy use it is still going strong. Still give it 5 stars.
