Fantastic album! It's rare for me to listen to a whole disc & love every song on it. The first time I saw Paolo was on the Graham Norton Show promoting his album Sunny Side Up. I purchased it & was very pleased with it, but this album has so much more to offer. It's really hard to describe the style of Caustic Love in one word. It is a nice mix of blues, pop (in a good way), rock, & soul. The texture of Paolo's voice is undeniable & unique. I have actually listened to it repeatedly & not grown tired of it.
There is no "cookie cutter" sound or style here. It might not be to everyone's liking, but it surely appeals to me. Well worth the 5 year wait from a mature artist that knows who he is.

Scottish singer Paolo Nutini has a great voice and uses it well with excellent phrasing but his pretty boy looks have probably meant that he hasn't got the critical recognition that his music really deserves. This new album sees him firmly in a soul groove, from the funk of opener 'Scream (funk my life up)' to the soul ballads like 'One day' and even the laid-back Allen Toussaint New Orleans-style R&B of 'Numpty'. There is plenty of variety here, the restrained almost acoustic song 'Better man', while 'Iron sky' (with it's sample from Chaplin's "Great Dictator") recalls the social-conciousness soul of classic Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield. The record sounds great and if there is a nod to the past this isn't the retro-soul of James Hunter or Sharon Jones, the backing is a perfect blend of old and new sounds, songs like the Janelle Monáe duet 'Fashion' sound bang-up-to date and many are also very commercial. Nutini has produced a record he can be proud of and which should prove to be very successful.

Paolo Nutini's first album ("These Streets", 2007) announced him as a wonder-child. His second ("Sunny Side Up," 2009) gave him credibility - he clearly wasn't just a one-album wonder.
"Caustic Love" confirms him as a genuine, long-term super talent. It is a brilliant album from beginning to end.
A brief biographical note: Nutini is Scottish, with an Italian background. He released "These Streets" when he was still a teenager. "Caustic Love" is his third studio album.
His songwriting is consistently strong, and the musical arrangements on this album are a step forward from his previous (very high standard) achievements.
His voice is distinctive without being cliched, and he uses more backing vocalists on this album than previously, with positive effect.
Fans of his earlier work may first prefer the middle tracks on the album - the more traditional Nutini sound (if we can accept that a 27 year old can have a "traditional sound.)"
However, even a second listen opens the entire album as a beautiful, coherent and sometimes quirky (Charlie Chaplin?) piece of music.
My own favourite track is the last, with its sound that moves him almost into the world of Brian Wilson, with lush harmonies and feelings of love. I like "Diana" for the same reason.
But whatever your favourites may turn out to be, I am confident that you will quickly learn to love the whole album.
A Scottish friend recommended him to me all those years ago. I am blessed, and if this happens to be your initial foray into his music, go right ahead and buy his first two albums also. Simply outstanding, wonderfully complex and yet accessible music.

How was I to know he'd just come along and funk my life up? I heard an interview with Paolo Nutini on NPR on 9/20/14 and bought Caustic Love as soon as I parked my car. Only nine days later, I drove 6 hours to see him perform live.

Caustic Love is completely different from his first two albums, both enjoyable in their own rights. I loved his vocals on These Streets, and Sunny Side Up has some great tracks, but I absolutely love his now-more-mature voice. Regardless of which of his songs I listen to last, they will be stuck in my head until I hear something different.

Paolo Nutini's voice is mesmerizing: soulful, funky, raspy, sexy, sultry, sweet, tender, and always passionate. I am so grateful to have seen him live in a small venue where I could appreciate the nuances of his voice and experience the power and emotion when he sings. Best concert I have E.V.E.R. seen. His band, The Vipers, is a tight and talented group of musicians; they do not disappoint. Having heard Paolo before I ever saw him, I was stunned to discover he's as handsome as he is talented. Enormous hazel eyes, gorgeous hair, full lips and an irresistible smile, his shirt unbuttoned just so, and dimples to boot, he had women of all ages swooning. Paolo Nutini delivers the sex appeal of early Elvis, the sultry moves of Roger Daltry, and the working-man attraction of Bruce Springsteen.

In his performances prior to the Caustic Love tour, young Paolo was often criticized for singing with his eyes closed and crouching over the microphone, but he is evolving into a very entertaining performer. He is still very intense, but he continues to improve at engaging the crowd and is owning much more of the stage. The hunched over, far-away Paolo-The-Boy has been replaced by sexy, smooth, grown-up Paolo-The-Man.
