I have been using Nuance dictation products for over 10 years. I think that Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12 for Windows is excellent, despite some clunky user interface design. But Dragon Dictate for Mac is in a class of its own for software bugs.

The software does a pretty good job of following my voice and putting words on the screen. The problem starts any time the user wants to make a change. For example, if a user wants to add a couple of words in the middle of a sentence in a previous paragraph, placing the cursor there and then dictating might get correct words but incorrect placement or punctuation.

- I have had instances where the inserted word wasn't placed where the cursor was, but one or two words away.

- Often Dragon adds an extra space or two before the inserted word and does not add a space after the inserted word.

- If an insertion is not a full sentence, then sometimes Dragon will capitalize the first word as though it were a full sentence.

- When inserting a full sentence, Dragon might not capitalize the first letter of the inserted sentence.

- It doesn't do new paragraphs correctly. If I put in a carriage return by hand and put the cursor on a new line, Dragon will insert two spaces before the first character on the line. Also, sometimes it will not capitalize the first word of that sentence.

- Dragon will not capitalize the first word of each line in a list. Oddly, if a previous line in a list ends in a period then it will capitalize the first word of the next line.

And so it goes. This becomes irritating very quickly because when the user makes corrections each correction requires further correction.

I have been using Dragon Dictate for Mac since version 2.0 and I've used Dragon NaturallySpeaking for windows previous to that since version 7... When I switched to a Mac I was extremely frustrated with the unnatural commands and just that they were not very user-friendly and streamlined with the Windows versions. With version 4.0 this appears to have been fixed I've been using the program for about 12 hours of dictation time since yesterday... The accuracy is much improved and I have not experienced any errors whatsoever...

I absolutely hated the last version... So far I am very pleased with the changes in usability and reliability of this version. If you contact Nuance directly if you are upgrading you may be able to get an upgrade for $99.

Update: 4/3/14... Some of the bugs that plagued version 3.0 seem to have returned... I don't get as many fatal crashes but after reading some responses I'm going to try using pages and numbers today and see if I get better results. Stay tuned for an update

Update: 6/20/14... Sometimes the program randomly crashes when I use the mail application... Don't know why but it's pretty annoying. Still better than version 3.0 but hoping they fix this issue soon.

Update: 7/2/14... The random errors that shut down the program in the mail application I've gotten worse... I can't stand it anymore when the program works is better than the previous version but the constant errors are becoming very frustrating. I'm going to reduce this from a four star review to a two star review. And I do have version 4.02 installed

Update: 8/1/14: started a new voice file and it seemed to fix a lot of my issues.

Update: 3/4/15: still buggy do not buy unless you absolutely have to.

✯✯✯✯✯✯✯✯✯✯✯✯✯✯✯✯✯
7/4/14 Update: if you are getting good results with Dragon Dictate 4 there are many of us who would like to know how. I just dictated a half page into Apples's Pages app and have an unacceptable amount of cleaning up to do. Even in Dictate's text processor there are far too many errors. Granted, this is better than Dragon Dictate for Mac version 3, but only marginally so. Most of the buggy behavior from version 3 remains, and the accuracy is still unsatisfactory.

I had called Dictate's tech support and was told that I should be using the text processor (in spite of its limitations). Dictating into the mail client of Maverick's is the worst, in spite of the fact that it was recommended by tech support. It is like it's having hallucinations as it comes up with text that does not even closely resemble what was dictated. During dictation, a spurious character is generated after the cursor. When I try to delete it the following text is altered and I have a mess trying to get rid of that character, or the other spurious characters that may be generated in other locations. There are a whole list of errors that were listed by another reviewer and I concurred with that list. I still do. Things have not improved significantly and Dragon Naturally Speaking for Windows version 12 remains the best option if you're going to be doing much serious dictation. If Nuance ever gets their stuff together they'll likely do very well business wise as there are many of us looking for a good dictation product for the Mac.

It was also suggested that I use DDM4 with Microsoft Office products fore better results. What? This product is supposed to be made for use with Apple products in the Apple operating system.
