Be careful here. I have bought several of these kits in the past and made two finished books and gave others as gifts. They were terrific! BUT... the company has changed hands. It's now owned by Lulu, a self-publishing company with a mixed reputation.
I've also worked with Lulu in the past. I thought the people I worked with were very nice and well-intentioned, but I ran into several problems when people ordered books. There were long delays and several times when I had to write to Lulu and say, "Hey, this person ordered a book three weeks ago... could you get on it?"
So I checked into the Better Business Bureau listings and found that there are many, many, many complaints now against Lulu specifically for this product. Most of the complaints are for non-delivery or long delays. Other complaints are for serious production errors-- missing text, kid's name misspelled, missing cover art, etc. You can see this yourself by searching the BBB website for Lulu.
If you have an older kit, beware: They're not going to honor them forever. You can check the Lulu Jr. website for full details, but in short, the kits expire now and they expire retroactively. Regardless, many people are reporting non-delivery no matter the age of the kit.
So why are there so many positive reviews here?
They're by Vine reviewers like me. We are expected to write reviews of any products we receive within 30 days. In some cases, like this, that's not really fair-- it's not possible to give a full review in 30 days because you cannot complete the book, mail it in, and get back the finished product within 30 days. Even under the ideal circumstances, Lulu says shipping takes 4-6 weeks.Read more ›

We commend you on your thorough research effort. You've noted some specific points that we acknowledge and own. It is accurate that during the transition from Easy Student Publishing / Publishing By You to Lulu Jr , we experienced difficulties and hurdles that have been challenging. Since January, we moved all management and production from Denver, CO to Raleigh, NC allowing us to devote greater resources and overall support to Illustory, My Comic Book, and My Awesome Book.
The relocation coupled with a higher than expected volume of school orders resulted in production delays this past Spring. Since January we have redesigned the book making kits, added a new product (My Awesome Book), upgraded our software and hardware to support higher volumes, engaged a new printer partner, and redesigned the website.
While some of the difficulties you describe in your review are issues we inherited, please be assured that the efforts described above are today bearing fruit with fewer production mishaps and quicker delivery times for printed books.
Our efforts to improve the customer experience and your child's delight are ongoing. We hope that once you have received your printed book you will be as equally pleased on that day as you have been in the past.
