My husband and I have spent years battling cat litter, with 3 cats and 2 cat boxes. He does the downstairs box and I do the upstairs box. We have tried many different brands and types of litter, hoping to find one that would “win” the odor battle, and reduce the dust and litter that invariably would follow the cats as they left their box. We had a friend that told us about a whole different concept in cat litter and we tried it out. Because we have one long hair cat and two regular hair cats, we decided to try both options – Healthy Pet regular hair Natural Wood Clumping Okocat litter, and Healthy Pet Long Hair Breeds Clumping Natural Wood Okocat litter.

We got the large boxes of litter, which are convenient and easy to use. The problem is that we ended up liking both types; it is difficult to choose which works better for our situation, so we decided to review both. Both types of Healthy Pet litter seem to really “win” the odor battle, and to our amazement, there is no longer any dust or trails of litter around the box. Because it lasts longer than previous litters, it is economical too.

Two Thumbs Up!

I've gone through several phases with this product: excitement, trepidation and, finally, enthusiasm.

Reading about this litter "made of 100% reclaimed natural wood" it's hard not to be excited. It claims to absorb 500%... 500% of what is unspecified but it says that it absorbs quickly, so I'm assuming that the 500% must be some type of speed claim. It claims to have seven day odor control, with "natural plant fiber" trapping the odors from your cat's waste and that you can flush the litter and waste down the drain as well for easy clean-up. All of these claims got me excited, as a cat owner and emptier of a litter box with standard litter.

Once I received the box and opened it I was less than impressed. These pellets look like the stuff that people feed or line the cages of small animals like gerbils or hamsters. Pouring it into my litter box I assumed this would be a failed experiment. It doesn't help that once my cat started using it he wouldn't bury anything.

But to my surprise the claims on the side of this box hold true over the course of time. My cat might not bury any of his waste but whatever odor control this stuff is using really works. The smell doesn't spread outside of the box. Also, when he pees in the box, the wood fiber quickly deteriorates around it and forms a ball of "litter" that is easy to scoop out of the box. And the biodegradable flushing claim is certainly true as well - the absorbent balls of litter easily come apart in the toilet and flush.

Because of the way the cat uses the litter in this box it is easy to make the litter last longer than normal litter - for my single cat a single box did last almost six weeks, as claimed. The price may be higher than normal litter but it also lasts longer as well.

I was expecting great things out of this litter given the smooth marketing and the price. If it cost's a lot it should be good right?

It might sound trite but I am on the fence with this litter. I have one cat, long hair and about 10 lbs. She had no problem using this litter at all - no transition time. She's not real finicky though and will use/eat just about anything (that can be, err, problematic too). I found this litter to really do well with smell of urine. Although it is harder pellet's (and the smell reminded me of guinea pig or gerbil stuff you use for bottom of cage and a pet store or shelter smell) it does expand and turn into more clumpy type litter with urine. As with other pellets it cannot handle the smell of feces well. I've got mine in a closet (small townhouse) and I really have to stay on top of the box to prevent smells from creeping out of the closet into my bedroom.

Outside of the smell issue for feces (which is probably able to be mitigated with diligence) I just think this stuff is pretty pricey for clumping litter. I am at week 3 and I have added more litter once and will have do do so again this week. That means this box will last, roughly, a month. My other cat litter lasts the same amount of time but at 1/4 or less of the cost.

As for tracking my little lady tracks no matter what I use. She's kind of slobby like that. I will say I cannot tell which I hate more - little grains of cat litter or the pellets. They hurt more when stepped on and they are more visible - pro and con with that. This stuff though tends to make more mess right outside and near the box - and I have not found it tracked outside the room the closet is in that holds the box. That's actually good (one star for that alone!)

I love it. For sure. This is some of the best clumping litter there is.

If you really care about the environment, and/or your cat's health, read on. Here are some of the great things about this product:

-- Great Odor Absorption: I have a great sense of smell, and a very small apartment, and I'm not a fan of the smell of cat feces in my kitchen. Wow, even when my cat doesn't bury it all the way, it still absorbs most of the smell! Happily surprised.
-- Natural and "Eco-friendly": I would say "all-natural" but in truth I don't know what the clumping agent is. But compared to clay-based litters - which despite being "natural" are very damaging to the planet both during the mining process of the clay, as well as in the disposal after cat use, since it is in no way biodegradable - this litter is FAR SUPERIOR in terms of its environmental sustainability.
-- Non-GMO: Even compared to other seemingly excellent "all-natural" cat litters, such as World's Best and Swheat Scoop (which also have much stronger unpleasant odors than pine) this is STILL the BEST option for environmental sustainability, as it is not made from genetically modified crops, and therefore does not support that industry. I used World's Best for a long time and was satisfied with its quality, but I refused to continue supporting companies like Monsanto by purchasing GMO corn and wheat in the form of cat litter, as the proliferation of GMO crops is a truly terrible practice, with intense social and environmental consequences that most people are unaware of.
--Non-dust: As far as dust, many cats, especially older cats, can develop respiratory issues. Choosing a dust-free or low-dust litter - and cleaning your home regularly - can prevent these sorts of issues.
